I heard students shouting ‘bandits, bandits’: Oriire survivor narrates dramatic capture
A survivor of the Oriire school abductions has described the dramatic moment bandits stormed their convoy, saying he first realised what was happening when students began shouting “bandits, bandits” in panic. He said the attackers suddenly appeared and ordered teachers and pupils to leave the road and move into the bush, adding that they obeyed because the gunmen were many and about 700 children were following behind. According to the survivor, the bandits then marched the group deep into the forest, where they spent weeks under harsh conditions, often exposed to rain and cold and surviving on limited food and water.
