Police insist bail is free, urge public to report erring officers
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has restated that bail is free in all police formations, warning officers against extorting suspects or their relatives under the guise of granting administrative bail. FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, gave the assurance while reacting to public complaints that some personnel were still demanding money before releasing suspects on bail. Adeh clarified that no officer is authorised to request or receive payment for bail, describing such demands as corrupt, unprofessional and punishable under police regulations. She urged members of the public to insist on their rights, refuse unlawful payments and document any attempt at extortion, including names, ranks, stations and evidence where possible.
