US, Israel launch strikes on Iran, target leaders and military sites

The United States and Israel have launched coordinated military strikes on Iran, targeting senior leaders and key military sites in a major escalation of tensions in the Middle East. The attacks were carried out on Saturday across several Iranian cities, including Tehran, Isfahan, Qom, Karaj, and Kermanshah, hitting command locations and strategic facilities. U S officials said American forces used air and naval assets to strike multiple targets, though the full scale of the operation has not yet been disclosed. The Israeli government described its role as a pre emptive move to remove threats to its security, while U S President Donald Trump called the campaign a major combat operation aimed at preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Iranian authorities confirmed that the strikes hit areas linked to the leadership, including a district in Tehran where Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali […]

Iran, US hold tense Oman talks as war fears grow

Iran and the United States have held high stakes indirect talks in Oman aimed at easing their nuclear dispute and preventing a new war in the Middle East. The negotiations in Muscat were arranged through Omani mediation and focused on Iran’s nuclear programme, but deep disagreements over missiles, regional militias and human rights threatened to derail progress. Iran wants the talks to be limited strictly to nuclear issues, while Washington insists its concerns about ballistic missiles, Tehran’s support for armed groups and its treatment of protesters must also be addressed. Iranian officials say their ballistic missile programme is non negotiable and part of the country’s defence, while demanding recognition of their right to enrich uranium and the lifting of US sanctions reimposed after Donald Trump quit the 2015 nuclear deal. For the US, allowing uranium enrichment inside Iran remains a […]

India and the European Union have reached a landmark trade agreement that will sharply cut or eliminate tariffs on most goods, opening up India’s vast market and deepening ties between the two economies. Czech citizen imprisoned in Venezuela released, foreign minister says

A Czech national imprisoned in Venezuela since 2024 on allegations of involvement in a plot to assassinate then President Nicolas Maduro and overthrow his government has been released, Czech Foreign Minister Petr Macinka has announced. The man was freed alongside other foreign detainees as part of a broader release of political prisoners by Venezuelan authorities. According to Czech media, he had been arrested over claims he planned to participate in a conspiracy against Maduro, though Prague has consistently rejected the accusations and previously described his detention as unlawful and without a fair trial. Macinka said the release followed several weeks of intense diplomatic negotiations and confirmed that citizens of Ireland, Romania, Germany, Albania, Ukraine and the Netherlands were also among those freed. The development comes amid a wider prisoner‑release process in Venezuela, with rights groups noting that the number of […]

RSF Israel killed most journalists worldwide in 2025

Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders says Israeli forces killed the highest number of journalists in the world for the third year in a row, mainly in the Gaza Strip. In its annual report, RSF found that 29 Palestinian journalists were killed by Israeli forces in Gaza over the past 12 months, accounting for about 43 percent of the 67 journalists killed globally. RSF described Israel as “the worst enemy of journalists,” saying the deaths were linked to military operations and not to stray bullets or accidental fire. The group stressed that many of the journalists were clearly identified as media workers and were killed while covering bombardments, displacement and humanitarian crises in Gaza. The report highlighted an August 25 “double tap” airstrike on a hospital in southern Gaza as the deadliest single incident. That attack killed five journalists, including two […]
