Third batch of Nigerians evacuated from South Africa arrives in Lagos

The third batch of Nigerians evacuated from South Africa has arrived in Lagos following weeks of anti-immigration protests and renewed xenophobic tensions in the country. Officials said the flight is part of the Federal Government’s ongoing plan to bring home citizens who voluntarily registered to leave An Air Peace aircraft conveying about 271 returnees departed Johannesburg in the early hours of Tuesday and landed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at around 10:00 a.m. local time. This latest operation follows two earlier evacuations that brought back over 320 Nigerians in separate batches Government representatives, including officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, were on ground to receive the evacuees and begin documentation, medical checks and other support services.
