Sachet alcohol ban: activists protest at NAFDAC Lagos office

Consumer rights advocates on Monday stormed the Lagos office of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to protest the planned enforcement of a ban on sachet alcoholic beverages. The demonstration was organised by the Coalition for the Protection of Consumers’ Rights and led by Comrade Olufemi Lawson. Lawson criticised the proposed enforcement as economically insensitive and poorly timed, warning it could worsen unemployment and hardship. He argued that manufacturers, distributors and consumers would all be hit, and questioned the policy’s consistency given that many of the affected products were previously tested, registered and approved by NAFDAC. He insisted that underage drinking is an enforcement problem, not a product problem, noting that sachet drinks are clearly labelled “not for sale to persons under 18”. The coalition also disputed claims of excessively high alcohol content, saying licensed […]

Institute Seeks Regulatory Commission to Fix Nigeria’s Ailing Courier, Logistics Sector

Professor Simon Emeje, Chairman of the Courier and Logistics Management Institute (CLMI), has called for the urgent establishment of an independent regulatory commission to reposition Nigeria’s courier and logistics industry. Despite being Africa’s largest economy, Nigeria is among less than 3% of countries without such independent regulation, leaving the industry plagued by inconsistent tariffs, conflicting policies, and a harsh business climate. Emeje warned that stagnant regulation forces firms to close or shift sectors and lamented overlapping controls from customs and other agencies. He emphasized the need for technical, not political, oversight and expanded professional training in logistics. He noted the sector’s economic potential (valued at $60 billion, with assets up to ₦20 trillion) and called for logistics education in universities. Emeje also highlighted the long-delayed regulatory bill, drafted in 2005 but never enacted, and urged Nigeria to boost intra-African trade […]

NAICOM Directs Insurance Customers to Link NIN to Policies

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has issued a directive requiring all insurance companies and brokers in Nigeria to collect verifiable identity details—including the National Identification Number (NIN), Bank Verification Number (BVN), and Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) documents for corporate clients—before initiating or renewing any insurance policy. The directive, effective immediately, is designed to strengthen market transparency, fight financial crime, and align insurance with national integrity standards. Policies already in force must be updated to include the required identity details by December 31, 2025. For group/corporate coverage, comprehensive employee lists with all relevant data must be provided before activation. NAICOM warned that insurers and brokers failing to comply will face regulatory sanctions. The agency encourages customer sensitisation campaigns and will monitor compliance closely to ensure a more secure, resilient, and competitive insurance sector.

Ghana’s PAC urges EPA to shut down petrol and gas stations in residential areas over safety concerns

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Ghana’s Parliament has called on the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to take decisive action against individuals and companies operating petrol and gas stations within residential communities. The Committee warned that these practices pose severe safety hazards and could have catastrophic consequences in the event of a fire or explosion. During a recent committee session, Acting Chair Samuel Atta Mills described the situation as both “alarming and unacceptable,” urging the EPA to strengthen enforcement and protect lives and property. “The dangers in siting petrol and gas stations within residential communities are real and deadly in times of emergencies. Such actions must not be entertained,” Atta Mills stated. He further called on the EPA to tighten its licensing procedures, noting that some operators exploit loopholes and allegedly […]

EU Accuses Meta and TikTok of Breaking Digital Rules

The European Union has formally accused tech giants Meta and TikTok of violating its landmark Digital Services Act (DSA), putting them at risk of substantial fines. The European Commission stated that both companies are failing to provide adequate data access to researchers, which is crucial for understanding issues like children's exposure to harmful content online. Additionally, Meta's platforms, Facebook and Instagram, were accused of not having user-friendly systems for reporting illegal content and for challenging content moderation decisions. The EU also cited "dark patterns"—deceptive design practices that can confuse users. Both companies have rejected the accusations. Meta stated it is confident its solutions comply with the law, while TikTok emphasized its commitment to transparency but noted a tension between data access and user privacy rules. The companies can now propose solutions to address the EU's concerns. If the Commission is […]

FG Urges Scientists to Give Clear, Factual GMO Feedback

The Federal Government has directed scientists in its ministries and agencies to improve their knowledge of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) to provide clear and factual information to the public. Officials emphasized that the public relies on government institutions for accurate guidance on the controversial topic. The heads of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency and the National Biosafety Management Agency stressed the need for transparency, open communication, and publishing trial data to address public concerns and earn trust. They assured Nigerians that GMOs are rigorously regulated […]

NAFDAC Shuts Chinese Supermarkets, 8 Shops in Abuja

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down two Chinese supermarkets and eight cosmetics shops in Abuja for violating health and safety regulations. The Chinese supermarkets, located in the Jabi district, were sealed for selling food products with labels only in Chinese, which is illegal in Nigeria. All regulated products must have English labeling for the Nigerian market. In a separate operation, NAFDAC closed eight cosmetics shops in Wuse Market. These shops were found selling banned, expired, and unregistered products. The confiscated items included illegal skin whitening gummies, unapproved aphrodisiacs, and dangerous body enhancement supplements. NAFDAC's Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stated that the raids, which seized goods worth over ₦170 million, are to protect Nigerians from harmful chemicals that can cause kidney damage, cancer, and other serious health issues. She advised the public to […]

Lagos Denies Ethnic Bias in Trade Fair Complex Demolition

The Lagos State Government has denied allegations that its recent demolition of structures at the Trade Fair Complex was targeted at a specific ethnic group. The State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Olumide Oluyinka, stated that the action was purely to enforce urban planning laws and ensure safety. He explained that numerous shops and buildings within the complex were constructed without government approval and violated safety standards. “The fact is that we just have to do our work. There is nothing ethnic here; it is purely technical,” Oluyinka said during a television interview. The Commissioner revealed that traders and the complex management had been given multiple notices before the demolition. He reported that government officials were harassed and even detained for hours on two separate occasions when they tried to issue these warnings. He also blamed the complex […]
