Iran resumes rail services on routes damaged by war

Iran has resumed rail services on several key routes after repairing sections of track damaged during the recent war with Israel and the United States, according to state media reports on Monday. Authorities have begun reconstruction work on bridges, railway lines and other infrastructure that were hit during nearly 40 days of fighting. A fragile ceasefire has been in place since Wednesday, creating space for emergency repairs and limited restoration of transport links. In Iran’s northwestern Azerbaijan region, the director general of the railways said trains have started running again from the city of Tabriz to the capital Tehran and to Mashhad in the northeast. “These trains have resumed service after an interruption of four to five days,” Alireza Soleimani told the official IRNA news agency. He added that the Tehran–Tabriz–Van service also left Tehran for Van in Turkey on […]

Trump Gaza peace board eyes 1 billion dollar fees

A draft charter for United States President Donald Trump’s proposed Gaza Board of Peace asks member countries to pay 1 billion dollars if they want their membership to last more than three years. The document was sent to about 60 countries and sets out rules for how long states can serve on the body. Under the draft, each member would normally serve a term of up to three years from the date the charter takes effect. The term can be renewed by the board chairman, but the three year limit does not apply to any country that contributes more than 1 billion dollars in cash to the board within the first year. The charter is part of Washington’s wider plan to set up a board that would oversee reconstruction and political arrangements in Gaza once the current conflict eases. The […]

Gaza universities reopen after two years of war, reviving hope for students

After two years of war that devastated the Gaza Strip, universities are slowly reopening and offering students a fragile but vital path back to education. Before the conflict began in October 2023, Gaza had 17 higher education institutions, but most of their hundreds of buildings now lie in ruins, with more than 100 university structures destroyed and about 200 staff members killed, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Education. At Al Azhar University in Gaza, administrators and students say they are determined not to let the war erase an entire generation’s future. Teaching has resumed on a temporary campus, where damaged classrooms and improvised facilities reflect both the scale of destruction and the determination of students returning to continue their studies. Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Shubeir said the university kept teaching online during the war, even as staff worked from […]
