Jinapor Criticises 24-Hour Economy Bill, Says Policy Has Created No Jobs

Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has sharply criticised the government’s proposed 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill, arguing that the flagship policy has failed to deliver jobs nearly a year into the administration. Speaking during parliamentary consideration of the bill on Thursday, February 5, Mr. Jinapor said the much-touted three-shift, eight-hour work system remains largely theoretical and has not translated into meaningful employment for Ghana’s unemployed youth. “Eleven months into the NDC administration, their flagship programme of a 24-hour economy, with the three-shift system for unemployed Ghanaian youth, the only place working some form of shifts today is the Office of the Speaker of Parliament, and even that is not a full 24-hour operation,” he stated. Questions Over New Authority Mr. Jinapor questioned the rationale behind establishing a new authority to supervise the policy, warning that it risks duplicating […]

Mamdani faces early tests as New York mayor

On a freezing winter day at the start of 2026, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani stood before a large crowd of supporters in Manhattan and promised to chart a “new story” for the city. In his inaugural address, the 34-year-old leader said his administration would focus on safety, affordability and opportunity, with a government that reflects the people it serves. The message echoed the campaign that carried Mamdani, a democratic socialist, to a surprise election victory in November. His platform included ambitious proposals such as universal childcare, free public bus services and city-operated grocery stores aimed at lowering living costs in one of the world’s most expensive cities. Turning those promises into reality, however, will not be easy. New York’s size, complex governance and ongoing budget pressures mean the new mayor must quickly secure the cooperation of key political […]

Ghana Imposes Moratorium on Independent Biometric Systems to Strengthen Data Security

The Office of the President has placed an immediate freeze on the procurement and use of independent biometric Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS) across all government institutions. The directive, issued by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, marks a significant shift in how Ghana manages biometric and identification data. This decision isn’t just administrative — it’s a push toward efficiency, data protection, and digital standardization in government operations. Why the Ban Matters For years, different Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) have operated separate biometric systems, often running parallel databases for verification and identity management. This fragmented approach has been expensive, inconsistent, and a serious risk to data integrity. The new moratorium prohibits all MDAs and state institutions from: Developing or deploying independent biometric platforms. Running parallel biometric databases. Verifying identities using only visual […]
