NAFDAC Shuts Chinese Supermarkets, 8 Shops in Abuja

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down two Chinese supermarkets and eight cosmetics shops in Abuja for violating health and safety regulations. The Chinese supermarkets, located in the Jabi district, were sealed for selling food products with labels only in Chinese, which is illegal in Nigeria. All regulated products must have English labeling for the Nigerian market. In a separate operation, NAFDAC closed eight cosmetics shops in Wuse Market. These shops were found selling banned, expired, and unregistered products. The confiscated items included illegal skin whitening gummies, unapproved aphrodisiacs, and dangerous body enhancement supplements. NAFDAC's Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stated that the raids, which seized goods worth over ₦170 million, are to protect Nigerians from harmful chemicals that can cause kidney damage, cancer, and other serious health issues. She advised the public to […]

Nigeria Records 166 Lassa Fever Deaths in 2025, Says NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported that Lassa fever has killed 166 people in the country so far in 2025. According to the NCDC's latest report, the total number of confirmed cases this year has reached 895. This results in a high case fatality rate of 18.5%, meaning approximately 1 in 5 confirmed patients has died. This rate is higher than what was recorded at the same time last year. The disease has been detected in 21 states. However, 90% of all cases are concentrated in just five states: Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi. In a positive development, the most recent weekly data (September 8-14) showed only 11 new cases, indicating a slight decline. Young adults aged 21 to 30 remain the most affected group. While the number of cases is currently lower than in 2024, […]

Togo’s CHU-Campus Launches 2026–2030 Reform Plan to Modernize Healthcare

Lomé, September 30, 2025 – The Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) Campus in Lomé has officially launched the development of its 2026–2030 Hospital Establishment Project (PEH), a five-year roadmap aimed at redefining the hospital’s mission, modernizing infrastructure, and improving the quality of care. A hospital under pressure Founded in 1988 with 200 beds, CHU-Campus has grown into Togo’s second-largest university hospital, now employing over 540 staff members. Yet, it is facing severe capacity limits due to demographic growth and an increasing burden of chronic diseases. “Our capacities are exceeded. The quality of care is a strategic priority that must guide our actions,” said Dr. Essotom Assina Kalao, Director-General of CHU-Campus. He also underlined the importance of anticipating equipment maintenance to prevent rapid obsolescence and ensure sustainability. Reform framework: 2026–2030 The PEH 2026–2030 will structure the hospital’s modernization over five years, with […]

EU Environment Chief Tests Positive for ‘Forever Chemicals’

EU environment commissioner Jessika Roswall has revealed she tested positive for toxic “forever chemicals” after undergoing a screening designed to raise awareness of their health risks. “Citizens are increasingly exposed to PFAS in their blood. I myself am no exception,” Roswall told reporters on Monday while presenting new European efforts on climate and environmental protection. The commissioner said some of the chemicals found in her blood are toxic for reproductive health, adding: “This strengthened my resolve to take our work forward.” Her team confirmed that Roswall tested positive for six of the 13 PFAS screened for, including three linked to reproductive harm, with concentrations in some cases exceeding safe levels. Roswall was among several EU ministers tested in July as part of a campaign to highlight pollution from PFAS — synthetic chemicals used in products such as nonstick pans, stain-resistant […]

World Bank: Poor sanitation costs Africa $200bn yearly

The World Bank has revealed that Africa loses an estimated $200 billion annually due to poor sanitation, warning that the crisis is undermining economic growth, public health, and climate resilience across the continent. In its latest report titled “The Global Sanitation Crisis: Pathways for Urgent Action” released on Tuesday, the Bank said nearly two in five people worldwide lack access to safe sanitation, with Africa carrying a disproportionate share of the burden. The study estimated that Africa’s GDP could rise by up to 5% if governments and stakeholders invested adequately in water and sanitation systems. “Every US$1 spent in Africa returns US$7 – adequate funding in the sector could boost GDP by 5 per cent, resulting in an annual economic gain of US$200 billion in Africa alone,” the report stated. The World Bank identified cholera, diarrhoea, and typhoid as preventable […]

US aid cuts push Zimbabwe’s sex workers into dangerous choices

In Harare’s crumbling outskirts, sex worker Sharon Mukakanhanga clutched a pair of baby socks — the desperate substitute she once used when condoms ran out. “These little socks served as condoms when I became so desperate after the American government withdrew its support,” the 43-year-old said, recalling how US aid cuts gutted her trusted health clinic. Mukakanhanga is one of thousands of sex workers left scrambling for protection since US President Donald Trump cut foreign health aid earlier this year. The move crippled HIV prevention programmes in Zimbabwe that had relied heavily on PEPFAR, Washington’s flagship HIV initiative. Rising deaths, shrinking support Official figures show 5,932 AIDS-related deaths in the first half of 2025, up from 5,712 a year earlier. Clinics once stocked with free condoms and antiretrovirals are now shuttered or overwhelmed. “It was a very difficult period. I […]

NAFDAC Seizes ₦1.2bn Fake Malaria Drugs in Lagos Raid

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confiscated counterfeit malaria medicines worth over ₦1.2 billion during a warehouse raid in Ilasa-Oshodi, Lagos State. The agency revealed in a statement on its official X handle that officials intercepted 277 cartons of fake and unregistered Malamal Forte tablets, concealed in boxes falsely labelled as Diclofenac Potassium 50mg. Investigations showed that the drugs were illegally imported from Shanxi Tianyuan Pharmaceuticals Group in China and falsely declared as spare parts in the shipping manifest. NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, praised the successful operation and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to safeguarding public health. “With the full support of the Presidency and the Federal Ministry of Health, NAFDAC will continue to intensify its crackdown on counterfeit and substandard medicines across Nigeria,” she said. The agency noted that the seizure was part […]

Oti Region Prosecutes 100 for Sanitation Offenses Amid Typhoid Surge

More than 100 people have been prosecuted in the Krachi East municipality of the Oti Region for flouting sanitation by-laws. The Oti Regional Environmental and Sanitation Taskforce brought the offenders before the Dambai District Magistrate Court on charges ranging from indiscriminate dumping of refuse to poor sanitation practices and open defecation. The crackdown follows a surge in typhoid fever cases in the region, with over 23,000 infections recorded in the first half of 2025, largely traced to poor hygiene and unsafe water sources. Regional Environmental Health Prosecutor Patrick K. Gbafa said the prosecutions are intended to protect public health, not merely punish. Offenders received fines between GH¢600 and GH¢840.44, while landlords without toilet facilities were ordered to provide them within three months or risk prosecution. Magistrate Alhassan Dramani, who recently recovered from typhoid, cautioned residents to take sanitation seriously. The […]

It spreads through contaminated food, water, or direct contact but can be prevented entirely through vaccination. In his opening remarks, Emir Mera urged traditional rulers to sustain their commitment to ending variant poliovirus (cVPV2), stressing that the final phase of eradication is often the toughest. He also called on leaders to address low acceptance of other vaccines such as HPV and […]
