Night Fire Razes Calabar Timber Market, Traders Count Losses

A late night fire has destroyed a major timber market in Calabar, Cross River State, leaving traders with heavy losses. The incident occurred at the Akim timber market on Friday night, when flames suddenly spread through rows of shops and wood stores. Witnesses said the fire started around midnight and quickly grew, helped by the dry weather and the large quantity of wood in the market. Many traders and residents rushed to the scene in an effort to salvage goods, but the intensity of the fire made it difficult to rescue most items.
