Protests trail Herzog’s final day in Australia

Pro Palestine protesters gathered in central Melbourne on Thursday as Israeli President Isaac Herzog ended his four day visit to Australia. Similar demonstrations had already taken place in Canberra and in Sydney, where clashes with police led to arrests earlier in the week.​ Herzog travelled to Australia at the invitation of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese following the December 14 shooting at a Hanukkah event at Sydney’s Bondi Beach that killed 15 people. Critics accuse him of complicity in civilian deaths in Gaza and objected to the state visit while the war continues.​ Demonstrators in Melbourne’s central business district rallied outside Flinders Street Station, many wearing keffiyeh scarves and waving Palestinian flags.
