Portugal observed a day of national mourning on Thursday after the death toll from a funicular derailment in Lisbon rose to 17, with 21 others injured. The accident occurred Wednesday evening when the city’s iconic yellow Gloria funicular veered off its steep tracks near Liberty Avenue, crashing into a building in one of the capital’s busiest tourist areas. Authorities said 15 people — eight men and seven women — died at the scene, while two others later succumbed to their injuries. Eleven of the injured were foreigners, including nationals of Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Canada, South Korea, Morocco, and Cape Verde.
