North Korea’s Kim Jong Un rejigs private security detail

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has replaced three senior officials in charge of his personal security, according to South Korea’s intelligence services. Analysts see the reshuffle as a sign he is tightening control over those closest to him amid concerns about loyalty and assassination threats. The officials served in elite units tasked with guarding Kim’s residence, convoy and public appearances. They have reportedly been reassigned and replaced by officers with long service records in the Guard Department and State Affairs Commission, which oversee the leader’s protection. Kim has already increased the visibility of bodyguards at his events, often appearing surrounded by closely packed security teams that move in formation around him. Recent state media footage also shows new faces in his inner protective ring, suggesting a broader shake up of the personal security structure. Experts say the changes follow […]

Why Goodluck Jonathan Stepped Back From Politics

Former President Goodluck Jonathan explained that his membership in the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) requires strict non-partisanship, which has kept him out of active politics. Speaking at his foundation’s 10th anniversary, Jonathan noted the forum’s mission is to prevent election crises across West Africa, intervening before problems escalate. Jonathan admitted he disappointed associates who expected a return to politics, but adherence to WAEF rules is a priority. He condemned the “rascality” in the current political climate and called for more responsible and prepared leadership. He reflected sadly on the kidnapping of 25 girls in Kebbi State, recalling similar incidents from his presidency, and offered prayers for their safe return. Jonathan said his foundation—focused on democracy and governance after advice from Tony Elumelu—committed to advancing democracy, peace, and institutional reforms across Africa, including mediation and building trust between citizens and […]

Emefiele Was a Disastrous CBN Governor, Political Puppet—Moghalu

Kingsley Moghalu, ex-deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has condemned Godwin Emefiele’s near decade-long leadership as “disastrous” and a key factor in Nigeria’s economic decline. Moghalu accused Emefiele of acting more as a political puppet than an independent banker, alleging that he routinely followed directives from former President Muhammadu Buhari, which undermined central bank autonomy. Emefiele’s tenure has faced multiple corruption allegations and legal challenges, including fraudulent procurement and the controversial naira redesign policy that led to widespread cash shortages, harming businesses and communities nationwide. The Supreme Court later ruled against the rollout, solidifying its status as a severely flawed policy. Moghalu also criticized Emefiele’s attempt to contest the 2023 presidential election without first resigning, calling it a clear case of partisan interference in a role meant to be insulated from politics. He contrasted this with former […]
