Abdulsalami: I told Obasanjo not to contest 1999 presidency

Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), has disclosed that he advised former President Olusegun Obasanjo not to contest the 1999 presidential election after Obasanjo's release from detention in 1998. When Obasanjo came to see Abdulsalami after his release, Abdulsalami advised him point-blank to abandon the idea of contesting the presidential race. Abdulsalami told him to go home, thank God he was still alive after four years of detention, and forget about becoming President. During the same meeting, Abdulsalami also talked Obasanjo out of filing a lawsuit against the Federal Government over his wrongful imprisonment, warning him that court processes are uncertain. Instead, Abdulsalami offered to explore compensation for the collapse of Obasanjo's business during his years in detention, and Obasanjo agreed not to pursue litigation. Abdulsalami described the encounter as forthright, stating that Obasanjo agreed to think about […]

SGF Akume explains why North-South presidential power rotation was conceived

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has revealed that Nigeria's North-South presidential power rotation arrangement emerged from consultations among political leaders seeking to heal divisions created by the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. Akume, a founding member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), said the decision was reached after extensive deliberations by party leaders who believed a rotational presidency would promote national unity, inclusion and political stability. At one key meeting, the agenda included two main items: power shift and the PDP's presidential candidature. It was a tough argument before the rotational presidency issue was agreed upon, but leaders eventually conceded because they recognized the June 12 annulment had complicated the entire situation. The arrangement was finally adopted to alternate power between the North and the South. Akume explained this decision was adopted in […]

2027: Obi–Kwankwaso Bid Faces Northern Resistance

Moves to float a joint 2027 presidential ticket featuring Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso are already running into stiff resistance from key northern stakeholders. While support groups have been promoting an Obi–Kwankwaso alliance under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or a new platform, many northern leaders say they remain unconvinced about the project and its chances. Northern elders and youth groups argue that Obi still suffers a trust deficit in parts of the region, with some politicians repeatedly linking him to alleged sympathy for the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) – a charge his camp has consistently denied. They also insist that his 2023 performance in core northern states shows he has a lot of ground to cover despite strong youth enthusiasm and social media visibility. There are also complaints that the proposed platform for the alliance is […]

Tambuwal steps down from Senate race, backs ex-commissioner

Former Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has stepped down from the 2027 Sokoto South Senatorial race. The ex-speaker confirmed he would no longer seek re-election to the Senate, despite earlier indications that he would be on the ballot. Tambuwal, who recently resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party and aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has instead thrown his weight behind former commissioner Aminu Bala Bodinga. Bodinga, a long-time ally, served in Tambuwal’s cabinet during his time as governor and is now being positioned as his preferred successor for the Sokoto South seat. In a message shared by his media team, Tambuwal said his decision followed wide consultations with political associates and constituents. He explained that he chose to step aside to allow “fresh energy” to emerge, while still offering guidance and support from behind the scenes. […]

2027 presidency: Jonathan’s declaration sparks stir

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has stirred the 2027 presidential race after declaring that he will “consult widely” before deciding whether to return to contest, a statement that has sparked intense reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape. Jonathan made the comments while addressing members of a support group, “Coalition for Jonathan 2027,” who visited him at his Abuja office to urge him to run in the next election. The group claimed to have a nationwide structure and millions of supporters ready to back his comeback, insisting that his experience and temperament are needed to stabilise the country. In response, Jonathan thanked them for their confidence but cautioned that presidential elections are “serious national business,” adding that he would not take any decision lightly. He stressed that Nigeria’s most urgent needs remain peace, credible elections and responsible leadership, and urged young people to […]

2027 polls: Supreme Court to decide PDP, ADC fate today

The Supreme Court will today deliver key judgments that will decide the fate of the Peoples Democratic Party and the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections. The apex court is set to rule on four appeals linked to leadership crises tearing through the two opposition parties. In the case of the PDP, the appeals centre on the validity of the party’s national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025. A faction led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is asking the court to uphold the convention and its decisions, while rival groups insist due process was not followed. Previous rulings from lower courts faulted the PDP for obtaining conflicting orders from courts of equal rank over its internal dispute. One Court of Appeal decision described the party’s actions as an abuse of […]

JUST IN: Supreme Court to hear appeals on PDP leadership dispute on April 22

The Supreme Court has fixed April 22 for the hearing of two appeals filed by the Kabiru Turaki‑led leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenging recent judgments on the party’s national leadership dispute. A five‑member panel of the apex court headed by Justice Mohammed Garba set the date on Tuesday while ruling on applications seeking accelerated hearing. The court granted the requests, allowing a departure from its usual rules and abridging the time within which the respondents must file their briefs. Under the timetable, the respondents have five days to file their briefs of argument, while the appellants are to file any reply briefs within two days. The court then adjourned until April 22 for substantive hearing of the two appeals. The Turaki group is appealing two March 9, 2026 Court of Appeal judgments which affirmed earlier decisions of […]

Police unseal PDP secretariat as factions clash over control

The Nigeria Police Force has reopened the Peoples Democratic Party national secretariat, Wadata Plaza in Abuja, handing control to a faction backed by Minister of the FCT Nyesom Wike. He said both the secretariat and the party’s presidential campaign office, Legacy House in Maitama, were unsealed in line with valid court orders. According to him, the properties have now been formally handed over to the Mohammed led National Working Committee, with Senator Samuel Anyanwu recognised as National Secretary. Mohammed praised the police for what he described as professionalism and respect for the rule of law, saying the action showed commitment to constitutional order and due process. He warned that the party would not tolerate any obstruction, disruption or […]

INEC Recognises Abdulrahman Mohammed As PDP National Chairman

The Independent National Electoral Commission has recognised Abdulrahman Mohammed as the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party. The recognition follows recent court decisions and the outcome of the party’s latest convention in Abuja. INEC’s position aligns with a Federal High Court judgment which voided the party’s November 16, 2025 convention in Ibadan and affirmed the Abdulrahman led structure. The commission subsequently updated its records to reflect Mohammed and his team as the authorised PDP leadership. At the recent PDP convention, delegates endorsed Abdulrahman Mohammed and a 22 member National Working Committee through a consensus arrangement. The convention was largely driven by a bloc of the party loyal to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. Other national officers returned alongside Mohammed include Samuel Anyanwu as national secretary and several deputies and financial officers. Party insiders say the new leadership has been […]
