Amotekun, the regional security outfit for South West Nigeria, is facing serious challenges that threaten its ability to maintain security in the region. Five years after its establishment, the organization is struggling with funding constraints, inadequate equipment, poor welfare conditions, and weak coordination among the six South Western states. Security experts have identified legal limitations as one of Amotekun's biggest operational challenges. Unlike the police and military, Amotekun operatives are barred from carrying certain weapons and face restrictions on access to critical resources. Bandits Destroy Houses, Kidnap Pastor’s Nine-Year-Old Son in Ondo

Armed bandits have attacked the Idogun community in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, destroying two houses and kidnapping a nine-year-old boy identified as Oluwatobi, the son of a local pastor, Isaac. The midnight raid took place in the Igbosi area of Idogun, where scores of gunmen stormed the community, set fire to buildings and whisked the child away to an unknown destination. Four years after its creation, the regional security outfit Amotekun (Operation Leopard) is still grappling with the hydra-headed security challenges in Nigeria’s South-West, as kidnappings, killings, and banditry continue to surge across Yorubaland. When the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN), codenamed Operation Amotekun, was set up in 2020, it was launched with fanfare and optimism that it would tame the rising insecurity plaguing the Southwest. Killers of 40 Church Worshippers Sentenced to Death by Hanging

A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced four men to death by hanging for their roles in the June 5, 2022 terrorist attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, where more than 40 worshippers were killed and over 100 others injured. Justice Emeka Nwite convicted the four defendants on a nine-count terrorism charge filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), including membership of a proscribed terrorist group, conspiracy to commit terrorist acts, hostage-taking, kidnapping, and killing of worshippers in breach of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act. BREAKING: Police foil deadly bomb attack in Akure, arrest six suspects

The Ondo State Police Command says its operatives have foiled a planned bomb attack in Akure, the state capital, and arrested six suspects in connection with the plot. Commissioner of Police Lawal Adebowale told reporters in Akure that materials suspected to be components of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were recovered from the suspects. Gunmen Abduct Health Workers In Akure, Police Rescue Victims

Gunmen have attacked a government health facility in the Oke Ijebu area of Akure, Ondo State, and abducted health workers on duty. The incident happened around 2:00 a.m. on Saturday when the armed men stormed the health centre opposite Mega School. Witnesses said the attackers arrived in a large bus, forced their way into the facility, and overpowered those present. Army Vows to Discipline Soldier in Ondo Driver’s Death

The Nigerian Army has vowed to expedite disciplinary action against a soldier involved in an altercation that led to the death of a commercial bus driver in Ondo State. The Chief Imam of Owo, Alhaji Ahmad Oladoke Aladesawe, has passed away at the age of 91.
