Police Arrest Activist Sowore at Abuja Court Premises

Activist and politician Omoyele Sowore was arrested by armed policemen on Thursday within the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The arrest occurred shortly after he attended a court session in solidarity with the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu. Police officers stated they were acting on the instructions of the Commissioner of Police and took him to the FCT Police Command. The Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, later explained that the arrest was linked to a protest Sowore led on Monday. Hundeyin stated that Sowore was arrested as the alleged leader of the protest to ensure "fairness," as others involved had already been charged. He assured that Sowore would be arraigned quickly and not detained beyond the legal limit. Sowore's lawyer condemned the arrest, calling it a mockery of the judicial system.

Presidency Seeks Sanction for Nnamdi Kanu’s Protesting Lawyer

The Presidency has called for sanctions against one of Nnamdi Kanu's lawyers, Aloy Ejimakor, for participating in a protest demanding his client's release. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, made the call on social media. He criticized Ejimakor for joining the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja, which was organized by activist Omoyele Sowore. Onanuga argued that the lawyer's action is unethical because Kanu's case is still before a court. He stated that the principle of sub judice—which restricts public discussion of ongoing court cases—should prevent a lawyer from engaging in such public demonstrations. He urged the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and other legal disciplinary bodies to investigate Ejimakor's conduct and impose appropriate sanctions. The Presidency believes the lawyer should focus on building a legal defense instead of protesting.

Heavy Security in Abuja as #FreeNnamdiKanu Protest Looms

A massive security lockdown was imposed in Abuja on Monday due to a planned protest demanding the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu. This caused significant traffic disruptions for commuters entering the Federal Capital Territory. Key areas like the Three Arms Zone, Eagle Square, and the National Assembly were under heavy guard. The measures were so strict that even staff with official clearance to the Presidential Villa were denied entry and forced to use alternative routes. The protest was organized by activist Omoyele Sowore. Nnamdi Kanu has been in detention since 2021, despite court orders for his release, with his supporters citing concerns over his health.

The police also specifically cautioned protesters to avoid the Aso Rock Presidential Villa and its surroundings.
