Tinubu Writes Senate, Seeks Approval To Borrow 5 Billion Dollars

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has written to the Nigerian Senate seeking approval to borrow an additional 5 billion dollars from external sources. The fresh request is part of the wider 2024–2026 external borrowing plan aimed at funding infrastructure and plugging budget deficits. In his letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu said the new facility would support key sectors such as transport, power, agriculture, health and education. He argued that concessional and semi concessional loans remained vital to delivering priority projects at a time of revenue constraints. The Senate had earlier approved a 21.5 billion dollar external borrowing plan for the 2025–2026 period. The latest 5 billion dollar request is expected to be processed under the same framework once lawmakers subject it to committee scrutiny and debate. Tinubu’s government has defended its borrowing strategy as necessary to stimulate growth and […]

Natasha Clarifies Invitation to Akpabio as Protocol

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has clarified that her official invitation to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other senators was a standard procedural courtesy, not a personal or political gesture. The invitation was for colleagues to attend the inauguration of constituency projects marking her second anniversary in the Senate. After the letter was read during plenary, some interpretations suggested it was an "olive branch" amidst their known political differences. The Senator expressed displeasure at this interpretation on her social media handles. She stated that the announcement was a routine protocol and not a sign of reconciliation. "Announcement by protocol don turn to 'Olive Branch, Reconciliation'," she wrote, adding that failing to invite the institution would have also been criticized. She explained that she followed customary practice by writing to the Senate through the presiding officer. She emphasized that despite ongoing court cases, […]

AGF Says Senator Natasha Violated Law in Akpabio Case

The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) has defended its decision to file defamation charges against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, stating her actions violated the Penal Code. The charges were initiated following complaints from Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello. The case relates to public statements made by the senator, including an allegation of an assassination plot against her. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who pleaded not guilty after being arraigned in June, filed a preliminary objection seeking to dismiss the charges. She argues that the AGF is abusing its prosecutorial power. In a newly filed counter-affidavit, the AGF's office urged the court to reject this objection. It stated that the charges were filed in the public interest after a police investigation and are consistent with Nigerian law. The prosecution alleges the senator made "harmful imputations," claiming […]

She’s in London. Everything is in place, and the six months have expired. The only thing left is her resumption,” Giwa said. Senator Natasha Set for Return as Six-Month Suspension Ends

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) has completed the six-month suspension imposed on her by the Senate on March 6, 2025, paving the way for her return to plenary. The lawmaker was barred from legislative duties, entry into the National Assembly, and access to official resources after being accused of breaching Senate rules. Akpoti-Uduaghan has consistently dismissed the sanction as politically motivated, insisting it was triggered by her petition alleging sexual harassment by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Her suspension sparked weeks of controversy, peaking in July when she stormed the National Assembly with her lawyers, brandishing a court judgment she claimed ordered her immediate recall. With the suspension now expired, focus has shifted to how her return will unfold amid lingering friction with the Senate leadership. Political observers say her re-entry could test unity in the chamber as key legislative battles […]
