IPOB Declares May 30 Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day, Urges Sit-at-Home Reflection
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared May 30, 2026, as Biafra Heroes and Heroines Remembrance Day and ordered a total sit-at-home across the South-East and parts of the South-South. In a statement by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB described May 30 as a “sacred day of remembrance, mourning, and reflection” to honour Biafran men, women, and children killed during the Nigerian Civil War between 1967 and 1970, as well as all those who have died in the struggle for self-determination. The group said the day is not a political ritual but a covenant with the fallen. As part of the observance, IPOB called for a total shutdown of commercial, social, and political activities in what it refers to as Biafraland, covering 13 states across the South-East and South-South.
