Rising Insecurity Pushes Nigeria Closer To State Police Model

Debate over state police has entered a new phase in Nigeria as worsening insecurity and growing public frustration force political leaders to consider concrete changes to the country’s policing system. Many analysts now believe the State Police Constitution Alteration Bill has a strong chance of becoming law, given open backing from President Bola Tinubu and several state governors. Supporters of state police argue that a single, centralised Nigeria Police Force can no longer adequately respond to diverse security challenges across a vast and complex country. They say decentralised forces will bring law enforcement closer to communities, improve response times and allow better understanding of local terrain, culture and crime patterns. Security experts quoted in recent discussions outline a likely structure in which each state would establish its own police service under a constitutional framework. These forces are expected to operate […]

Lai Mohammed Urges Nigerians To Back Tinubu On Insecurity

Former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has called on Nigerians to give stronger support to President Bola Tinubu’s administration in its efforts to tackle insecurity. He said the scale and complexity of today’s security threats make it impossible for government and security agencies to succeed without active citizen cooperation. Speaking in an interview, Mohammed noted that the Tinubu government has introduced several measures to curb terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes. However, he argued that these steps will only produce lasting results if communities share information, resist propaganda and stop shielding criminals. He criticised what he described as a growing tendency to politicise security issues and to downplay government successes while amplifying failures. According to him, such attitudes embolden violent groups and weaken the morale of security personnel risking their lives on the frontlines. Mohammed urged […]

More Money For Govt Yet Nigerians Get Poorer

A new analysis has shown that funds shared by the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee to the three tiers of government have surged sharply in the last four years, yet living conditions for most Nigerians keep deteriorating. The report revealed that total FAAC allocations jumped from about N9.18 trillion in 2022 to N10.9 trillion in 2023 and N15.26 trillion in 2024, an increase of roughly 66 percent within two years. Despite this rise in public revenue, poverty indicators remain grim, with more households struggling to afford food, transport, health care and housing. Rising inflation, weak job growth and the impact of subsidy removal have combined to wipe out any potential benefits of higher government earnings for ordinary citizens. Data in the report show that states and local governments have also benefited significantly from the higher inflows, receiving record amounts from FAAC […]
