Confusion trails alleged kidnap of 172 Kaduna church worshippers

Confusion has trailed reports that 172 worshippers were kidnapped by terrorists during Sunday services at three churches in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State. While church leaders insist that scores of members were abducted, the police and the local council chairman say no mass kidnapping took place. Christian leaders in the area, including officials of the Christian Association of Nigeria, say armed men attacked Cherubim and Seraphim churches in the Kurmin Wali area and took worshippers into the bush. Northern CAN leaders have put the figure of abducted Christians at 163, saying nine of the 172 people initially seized later escaped. However, Kaduna State Government and the Police Command have dismissed the reports as false and misleading. US never targeted me in Sokoto airstrikes, says Gumi

Kaduna based Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has dismissed reports that he was targeted by the United States during recent joint Nigeria US airstrikes on terrorist camps in Sokoto State. He described the claims as fake news, explaining that people had misinterpreted an old video in which he spoke about threats to his life more than a decade ago. Gumi said the viral clip being shared online referred to an incident in August 2012, when he was allegedly marked for assassination by Boko Haram near his residence. According to him, two suspected attackers died after the explosive device they were carrying reportedly detonated before they could reach him, and the episode had nothing to do with the latest air operations in Sokoto. In a statement posted on his official social media page, the cleric insisted he never suggested that US […]

How I Led 600 Bandits to Surrender – Gumi Defends Peace Efforts

Popular Islamic cleric Sheikh Gumi has defended his controversial peace efforts with bandits, revealing he played a pivotal role in causing over 600 armed bandits and their commanders to surrender in Sabon Garin Yadi forest, Kaduna State. Speaking in a recent statement, Gumi described his mediation—accompanied by the then Kaduna State Commissioner of Police in January 2021—as a successful intervention aimed at de-escalating violence and promoting dialogue. Gumi claimed the meeting persuaded the militants to lay down arms in exchange for security and basic amenities, but also criticised the government for failing to honour its part of the agreement. According to Gumi, the missed opportunity led to renewed violence, as none of the bandits’ conditions were fulfilled. He dismissed calls for his arrest as misguided, insisting that mediation and open dialogue remain essential tools for peace. Gumi cautioned Nigerians against […]

NSA, Service Chiefs Meet Over Planned U.S. Military Action Against Nigeria

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, on Monday held a high-level meeting with service chiefs and heads of security and intelligence agencies in Abuja following U.S. President Donald Trump’s declaration of possible military action against Nigeria over alleged killings of Christians. According to sources, the emergency meeting — which took place at the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) — was convened to coordinate a national security response and assess the implications of the U.S. president’s statement. The outcome of the deliberation, sources said, would be communicated through official channels from the NSA’s office. Trump, speaking late Sunday aboard Air Force One, warned that ground operations and air strikes could form part of a potential U.S. attack on Nigeria if the country failed to curb “mass killings of Christians.” “They’re killing the Christians and killing them in very large […]

A prominent lawyer, Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), has publicly supported President Bola Tinubu's decision to replace the country's service chiefs. In an interview on Channels Television, Agbakoba described the president's move as "wise and timely." This endorsement comes amidst public rumors of a suspected coup plot, though the military has denied these claims. President Tinubu announced a major reshuffle in the military's top leadership on Friday. The changes are part of an effort to strengthen Nigeria's security architecture. Agbakoba, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), praised President Tinubu's decisiveness. He contrasted this with the previous administration, stating that former President Muhammadu Buhari was often reluctant to make such tough personnel changes. "You have a president who is prepared to take tough decisions," Agbakoba said. He added that if the coup rumors were true, then replacing the service chiefs […]
