Ebola Alert: FG Tightens Airport, Border Screening

The Federal Government has announced plans to enforce stricter monitoring and screening measures at airports and border points to prevent a possible Ebola outbreak in Nigeria. The move follows an emergency preparedness meeting convened in Lagos on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, where health authorities, security agencies, and emergency response officials reviewed the country's readiness against the deadly virus. The high-level meeting was led by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila. Speaking after the closed-door meeting, Gbajabiamila assured Nigerians that there is currently no confirmed Ebola case in the country. "The government is putting things in place to make sure that this doesn't spread out," he said, urging Nigerians not to panic. Lassa Fever: Medical Academy Demands Action as Deaths Hit 204

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed that Lassa fever has killed 204 people in Nigeria in 2026, prompting the Nigerian Academy of Medicine to demand urgent government action as the fatality rate worsens. As of May 29, 2026, the NCDC has recorded 793 laboratory-confirmed Lassa fever cases across multiple states, with the outbreak's case fatality rate rising to approximately 25.7%, higher than previous years and surpassing 2025 levels. Delayed treatment and weak surveillance systems have been cited as major factors contributing to the rising death toll. The Academy of Medicine has called on the Federal Government to declare the Lassa fever outbreak a national health emergency, strengthen year-round surveillance, improve early detection systems, and ensure adequate funding for diagnostics, treatment, and community engagement. Members warned that the current trend threatens Nigeria's public health security and […]

Nigeria at High Risk of Ebola Virus Importation – NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has declared Nigeria at "high risk" of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) being imported into the country. The NCDC activated emergency response teams following the alert. The agency classified the risk as high due to ongoing Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and a recently reported imported case in Uganda. NCDC Director-General stated that the agency is closely monitoring developments across the region and working with relevant stakeholders, including the Port Health Service of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, to strengthen vigilance and preparedness within Nigeria's public health system. The likelihood of importation to Nigeria is high due to increased air travel between Nigeria and Uganda, especially through Kenya's Nairobi Airport, which serves as a major transit hub connecting the countries. The NCDC confirmed that […]
