Days of reckoning: How El Rufai’s controversial legacy is catching up with him

Nasir El Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State and ex minister of the Federal Capital Territory, is facing intense scrutiny as corruption probes and public backlash put his record in office under a harsh spotlight. Once seen by many as a tough reformer, he is now battling allegations of financial mismanagement, human rights abuses and divisive politics from his years in power. Investigations ordered by his successor, Governor Uba Sani, and followed up by anti graft agencies have reportedly uncovered huge debt overhangs, controversial loan deals and contracts said to have been paid for but not executed. A Kaduna State House of Assembly ad hoc committee recommended his prosecution, accusing his administration of abuse of office, inflated contracts, money laundering and diversion of public funds. Critics also point to El Rufai’s long record of polarising decisions and statements, including mass […]

EFCC trial of Malami, El Rufai won’t intimidate opposition, says ADC

The African Democratic Congress has said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s prosecution of former Attorney General Abubakar Malami and ex Kaduna governor Nasir El Rufai will not intimidate opposition politicians or weaken the party’s resolve. ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi described the cases as “selective prosecutions” that appear politically motivated. He argued that while the party supports the fight against corruption, recent EFCC actions give the impression that the agency is being used as “a gladiator in the political arena rather than an impartial warrior against financial malpractice.” Abdullahi warned that targeting prominent opposition figures risks undermining public confidence in anti graft institutions. The ADC also condemned the alleged attempt to arrest El Rufai at the Abuja airport and the tear gassing of his supporters during a protest at the EFCC headquarters. The party said such incidents look […]

El Rufai risks two year jail term on new cybercrime charges

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El Rufai faces up to two years in prison if convicted on fresh cybercrime charges filed against him over the alleged interception of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu’s phone calls. The Department of State Services accuses him of admitting on live television that he listened to recordings of Ribadu’s private conversations obtained through illegal phone tapping. The three count charge, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, is based on provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act 2024 and the Nigerian Communications Act 2003. In the first count, prosecutors say El Rufai confessed during an Arise TV interview on February 13 that he and others unlawfully intercepted the NSA’s communications, an offence under Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes Act. The second count alleges that he knew and associated with the person who […]

DSS files cybercrime charges against El Rufai over alleged bugging of NSA Ribadu’s phone

The Department of State Services has filed cybercrime charges against former Kaduna State governor Nasir El Rufai over the alleged unlawful interception of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu’s phone communications. The case was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, days after El Rufai claimed in a live TV interview that he listened to a tapped phone call in which Ribadu allegedly ordered security agents to detain him. According to court documents, prosecutors allege that El Rufai, 65, admitted during an appearance on Arise TV’s Prime Time programme on 13 February that he and unnamed associates had access to Ribadu’s private phone conversations. The government says the alleged act violates Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act 2024, which criminalises unlawful interception of communications. In a second count, the DSS accuses El Rufai of stating in […]

El Rufai demands answers over alleged toxic chemical purchase by ONSA

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El Rufai has accused the Office of the National Security Adviser, led by Nuhu Ribadu, of procuring an odourless and highly poisonous chemical substance. He raised the alarm in a letter asking the NSA to explain why about 10 kilograms of thallium sulphate were allegedly imported from a supplier in Poland. In the letter, which he shared on his social media page, El Rufai described thallium sulphate as a dangerous and tightly regulated substance. He said information about the procurement had reached opposition leaders and insisted that Nigerians deserve full transparency on the intended use. El Rufai asked the NSA to confirm whether the purchase was authorised, under which law it was made and for what specific security purpose. He also requested clarity on the storage, handling and safeguards put in place to prevent abuse […]
