Canal+ to discontinue Showmax after MultiChoice takeover

French media group Canal+, the new owner of MultiChoice, has announced plans to discontinue the Showmax streaming service after a review of the company’s digital operations. In a statement, MultiChoice said the Showmax board approved the shutdown because the platform’s heavy annual losses had become unsustainable in an increasingly competitive and capital intensive global streaming market. The company explained that, instead of continuing to fund Showmax, it will redirect resources into building a new large scale in house streaming platform aimed at both African and international audiences. Details of the new service and launch date will be announced later. Subscribers were informed about the planned discontinuation by email, with Showmax saying the move is intended to ensure long term sustainability and more efficient investment under the enlarged Canal+ MultiChoice group. MultiChoice and Canal+ stressed that no job losses are expected […]

Phyna clears air on N100m BBNaija prize controversy

Reality TV star Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has denied claiming she did not receive her N100 million Big Brother Naija grand prize. She said a viral clip suggesting otherwise was edited from a longer Twitch livestream and taken out of context. Phyna explained that she was addressing people who questioned whether her prize money had finished, not alleging that the organisers withheld her winnings. She accused some bloggers of deliberately cutting her video to create controversy. “They keep cutting my video, I never said I have not received my 100 million naira. I was only talking to people who asked me if the 100 million naira had finished,” she said during the livestream. The issue resurfaced because she had previously called out the BBNaija organisers in 2024 over some unpaid prizes. She said she later had to explain […]

BBNaija Season 10 recorded over 5m illegal streams — MultiChoice raises alarm

A senior MultiChoice executive has revealed that Big Brother Naija Season 10 recorded more than five million illegal streams across various online platforms. Speaking at NECLive 2025, the official said the figure was compiled from monitoring data and takedown reports gathered during and after the show. She warned that such massive piracy erodes advertising and subscription revenue, undermining the huge investments that go into producing and broadcasting BBNaija. According to her, unchecked illegal streaming could eventually threaten the sustainability of large-scale reality formats in Nigeria. The executive noted that some viewers justify illegal access on the grounds of economic hardship and high subscription costs. However, she stressed that creators, crew and broadcasters all depend on legitimate payments, urging fans to support the show through authorised channels only. Her comments sparked mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians criticising MultiChoice over pricing […]
