Madagascar Revokes Ousted President’s Citizenship

Madagascar's new government has officially stripped former President Andry Rajoelina of his Malagasy nationality. The decree was published in the official gazette just ten days after Rajoelina was removed from power in a military takeover. The decision effectively bars him from contesting any future elections in the country. The government's order cites a national law which states that any Malagasy citizen who voluntarily acquires foreign citizenship automatically loses their original nationality. Reports confirm that Rajoelina acquired French citizenship in 2014. This French citizenship had previously caused a political scandal when it was revealed ahead of the 2023 presidential election. Despite calls for his disqualification at the time, Rajoelina won the contested poll, which was boycotted by the opposition. Rajoelina was impeached on October 14 after fleeing the country amidst widespread, youth-led protests. The army unit tasked with suppressing the demonstrations, […]

Army Colonel Sworn In as Madagascar President After Military Takeover

An army colonel, Michael Randrianirina, has been sworn in as the new president of Madagascar. This follows a military takeover that forced former president Andry Rajoelina to flee the country. The swearing-in ceremony took place in the capital, Antananarivo, just days after Colonel Randrianirina's army unit mutinied and sided with anti-government protesters. The constitutional court then impeached Rajoelina for "desertion of duty." In his speech, the new president called the event a "historic turning point" and promised to break from the past. He pledged to draft a new constitution and hold elections within 18 to 24 months. He insisted the country would not be run by a military regime but by a civilian government. Randrianirina has denied that the takeover was a coup, pointing to the court's backing. He stated the army intervened to "avoid anarchy and disorder," thanking the […]

Madagascar President Dissolves Parliament Amid Political Crisis

Madagascar’s embattled President Andry Rajoelina has issued a decree dissolving the National Assembly, in a last-ditch attempt to stave off a political collapse as pressure mounts for his resignation. The president, who has reportedly fled the country, announced the decree on social media on Tuesday — just hours before lawmakers were expected to hold an impeachment vote against him. The political climate remains tense, with sections of the military and police now backing mass protests demanding that Rajoelina step down. According to a statement released by the presidency on Facebook, the decree “shall enter into force immediately upon its publication by radio and/or television broadcast.” Rajoelina defended his action in a separate online post, calling it a move to “restore order within our nation and strengthen democracy.” However, opposition leader Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, who was leading the impeachment effort, dismissed the […]

Madagascar President Warns of Attempted Power Seizure

Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina has warned that an “attempt to seize power illegally and by force” is underway, following reports that a group of soldiers joined anti-government protests in the capital, Antananarivo. The warning came on Sunday, a day after soldiers stationed on the outskirts of the city called on security forces to “join forces” and “refuse orders to shoot” at protesters, denouncing the violent crackdown on ongoing demonstrations. The protests, led mostly by young people, have continued for over two weeks, sparked by frustration over power and water shortages across the country. On Saturday, soldiers clashed with gendarmes outside their barracks before riding into Antananarivo on army vehicles to join thousands of demonstrators gathered at the symbolic Place du 13 Mai in front of the city hall. The crowd reportedly cheered their arrival and chanted calls for President Rajoelina […]

Madagascar Soldiers Urge Army to Defy Orders Against Protesters

A group of soldiers from a military base near Madagascar’s capital, Antananarivo, has called on fellow troops and security forces to reject any orders to shoot at protesters. The message, shared in a video on Saturday morning, came as thousands of demonstrators marched in the city. “Let us unite — soldiers, gendarmes, and police — and refuse to be paid to shoot our friends, our brothers, and our sisters,” the soldiers from the Soanierana base said in the video. They urged colleagues across the country to “refuse orders to shoot” and “close the gates” of their camps until further notice. The soldiers also warned others not to follow commands from superiors who might order violence against protesters, adding, “Those who give such orders will not care for our families if we die.” It remains unclear how many soldiers have joined […]
