ASUU Rejects FG Loan Offer, Calls It a Greek Gift

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter, has rejected the federal government’s loan proposal for lecturers, describing it as a “Greek gift.” During a special congress held on campus Tuesday, the union said its members were not interested in loans but in the fulfillment of existing welfare agreements. Speaking to members after a solidarity march from the university’s main gate, the UNILAG Branch Chairman, Prof. Idowu Kehinde, stressed that the government should focus on paying lecturers their entitlements rather than offering loans. “The loans are to be guaranteed by our union. This is unnecessary. University governing councils can already provide loans to staff based on their conditions of service.
