Tinubu approves ₦3.3tr plan to clear power sector debts

President Bola Tinubu has approved a ₦3.3 trillion payment plan to settle long standing debts in Nigeria’s power sector. The move targets obligations owed to power generation companies and gas suppliers that have piled up for more than a decade. According to statements from the presidency, the debts cover legacy obligations accumulated between February 2015 and March 2025 under the Presidential Power Sector Financial Reforms Programme. Following verification and reconciliation, ₦3.3 trillion was agreed as the full and final settlement amount. NPP Urges Mahama to Release Load-Shedding Timetable Amid Power Crisis

The Minority caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament has called on President John Mahama to publish a load-shedding timetable to help businesses and households manage the ongoing power crisis.Speaking at a press conference on March 3, former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam criticized Mahama’s handling of the energy sector. He accused the President of failing to address the worsening ‘dumsor’ situation, which is severely impacting small businesses like salons, welders, and tailors.Dr. Amin Adam also challenged Mahama’s claim in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) that he had resolved Ghana’s power crisis before leaving office. He insisted that the issue persisted and that the NPP administration had stabilized the situation.Calling the situation dire, he urged the government to provide a clear load-shedding schedule to allow citizens to plan effectively and minimize economic losses.
