Trump unveils strategy to shift US military focus closer to home
President Donald Trump has released a new national security strategy that calls for a major realignment of United States military deployments around the world. The document proposes a “readjustment” of the US global military presence, moving more forces and assets toward the Western Hemisphere to tackle what it describes as urgent regional threats, including migration, drug cartels and instability in Latin America and the Caribbean. According to the strategy, the US will gradually scale back its footprint in some overseas theatres, while boosting Coast Guard and Navy patrols to control sea lanes, curb illegal and unwanted migration, and disrupt human and drug trafficking routes.
