Bullets before ballots: insecurity threatens 2027 polls; 5,272 killed in 5 months

Seven months to the 2027 general elections, worsening insecurity across Nigeria is casting a shadow over preparations for what should be a watershed democratic exercise, with a staggering 5,272 people killed in just five months amid a resurgence of terrorist attacks and banditry. Before the commencement of campaigns for the 2027 general elections, rising insecurity across parts of Nigeria has become a major source of national concern, undermining public confidence in the electoral process. The country's security situation has continued to deteriorate with increasing attacks on civilians, schools, and military formations, raising serious questions about whether the elections will hold as scheduled. Data from the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2025 showed that Nigeria recorded 171 terror attacks in 2025, representing a 43 per cent increase from the 120 attacks recorded in 2024. Terror-related deaths also rose from 513 in 2024 […]

Armed bandits and criminal hoodlums in Nigeria are increasingly using social media platforms, especially TikTok, to flaunt cash, hold livestreams, and fund giveaways to attract attention and build online followings. Investigators say these "cash-flaunting bandits" use money from criminal activities to stockpile arms and ammunition, buy food, and organise social gatherings in forest hideouts. The same funds are also poured into their digital presence, where they display large amounts of cash, luxury items and flashy lifestyles through short videos and live streams. These bandits run regular livestreams on TikTok, where they encourage viewers to join giveaways, follow their accounts, and engage with their content. Some of them have become known online for their flamboyant displays of wealth, even as they remain linked to kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes. The use of social media by these criminal groups has […]

States Rush to Deploy Forest Guards as Insecurity Deepens

Multiple Nigerian states are rushing to deploy forest guards as insecurity deepens across the country, marking a significant expansion of the federal government's Presidential Forest Guards Initiative. The programme was launched by President Bola Tinubu in May 2025 as part of renewed efforts to tackle nationwide insecurity, and has already yielded fruits with over 7,000 newly recruited Nigerian Forest Guards graduating following successful completion of an intensive three-month training programme. Kwara State has deployed nearly 1,000 newly trained forest guards to its hinterlands, declaring war on terrorists and kidnappers exploiting the state's wooded terrain. Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq delivered a blunt message to criminal elements at a passing-out parade in Ilorin: their days of using Kwara's forests as a sanctuary are over, with plans to station at least 200 guards in each of the state's 17 local government areas. Supreme Court Upholds Death by Hanging for Kidnapper

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has upheld a death sentence by hanging for a kidnapper convicted of kidnapping and murder in a landmark ruling that reaffirms the harsh penalty for the capital offence. The court dismissed the kidnapper's appeal against the conviction and sentence, stating that the prosecution had established a solid case against the defendant beyond reasonable doubt and that the appeal lacked merit. In its judgment, the Supreme Court confirmed that kidnapping combined with murder constitutes a capital offence under Nigeria's criminal law, and the sentence of death by hanging remains in full effect. The ruling comes at a time when kidnapping has become a major security challenge in several parts of Nigeria, with the judiciary increasingly taking a hard stance against perpetrators of the crime. The Supreme Court's decision aligns with previous rulings in similar cases, including […]

Insecurity in Yorubaland: Is Amotekun Still Effective in South-West?

Four years after its creation, the regional security outfit Amotekun (Operation Leopard) is still grappling with the hydra-headed security challenges in Nigeria’s South-West, as kidnappings, killings, and banditry continue to surge across Yorubaland. When the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN), codenamed Operation Amotekun, was set up in 2020, it was launched with fanfare and optimism that it would tame the rising insecurity plaguing the Southwest. Four years on, however, stakeholders believe there has been a surge in crime and criminality within the region. Critical stakeholders, including traditional rulers, convened by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, recently confirmed the worsening security situation during a summit on insecurity.
