Ukraine resumes oil transit, unlocking EU loan

Ukraine has resumed the transit of Russian oil through a key pipeline supplying Hungary and Slovakia, ending a months-long standoff that had delayed crucial European Union financial support for Kyiv. Shortly after the restart, EU ambassadors meeting in Brussels gave preliminary approval to a €90bn loan package for Ukraine, along with a new round of sanctions targeting Russia. Final approval is expected imminently. The funding, initially agreed in December, had been blocked by Viktor Orbán in February. His veto came after oil flows were disrupted due to damage caused by Russian strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure. Budapest had insisted that supplies be restored before any financial support could proceed. Ukrainian authorities confirmed that repairs had been completed and pumping resumed, with oil expected to reach Slovakia and Hungary within days. The pipeline in question is part of the Druzhba pipeline, a […]

Crude hits 114 as fears grow over fresh petrol price hikes in Nigeria

There are fresh concerns that petrol prices in Nigeria could rise further after Brent crude oil jumped to about 114 dollars per barrel following a sharp escalation in the United States and Israel war on Iran . Petrol is already selling for between N1,200 and N1,400 per litre in parts of the country, up from around N730 to N880 per litre before the conflict began on February 28 . Global prices surged after Israel struck Iran’s South Pars gas field, the world’s largest gas deposit, prompting Iranian missile and drone attacks on energy facilities in Qatar and Saudi Arabia and triggering fears of wider disruption to supplies . Brent crude rose by about 6.24 percent to 114.08 dollars per barrel, its highest level since May 2022, while US West Texas Intermediate crude climbed to around 96.33 dollars per barrel . […]

Iran rejects truce bids as Israel targets top security chiefs

Iran has rejected proposals from foreign intermediaries to ease tensions or agree a ceasefire with the United States and Israel, insisting it is not yet the right time for peace . A senior Iranian official said two countries had passed on ideas to reduce tensions or reach a ceasefire, but Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s new supreme leader, turned them down . According to the official, Khamenei told his first foreign policy meeting that there could be no peace until the United States and Israel are brought to their knees, accept defeat and pay compensation . Khamenei’s comments came as the US Israeli war on Iran entered its third week, with at least 2,000 people reported killed and no sign of an end to the conflict . The Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for about 20 percent of global oil […]

EU rejects Trump request on Strait of Hormuz

European Union leaders have rejected a request from United States President Donald Trump for military help to secure the Strait of Hormuz, as EU foreign ministers met in Brussels to discuss soaring oil prices caused by the US Israeli war on Iran . Trump had urged the United Kingdom, China, France, Japan, South Korea and other NATO allies to send naval ships to protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, warning it would be very bad for NATO’s future if partners did not help secure the vital waterway . US officials spent the weekend trying to build support for a new coalition to patrol the strait and said they hoped to announce it in the coming days, although it remains unclear which countries will join or when any operation would start . Many close US allies are reluctant to send […]

Estonia blasts Russia over brazen airspace violation

Estonia’s foreign ministry has accused Russia of violating its airspace, calling the incursion by Russian fighter jets “brazen” and “extremely dangerous.” According to officials in Tallinn, three Russian MiG-31 warplanes entered Estonian airspace without permission on Friday, flying over the Gulf of Finland for a total of 12 minutes. The aircraft reportedly had their transponders switched off, a move seen as a direct provocation against a NATO member state. In response, Estonia summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires to lodge a formal protest. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the incident as “an extremely dangerous provocation,” while Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna called it “unprecedentedly brazen.” “Russia’s increasingly extensive testing of boundaries and growing aggressiveness must be met with a swift increase in political and economic pressure,” Tsahkna warned in a statement. Estonian officials noted that Russia has violated the country’s […]

China Rejects Trump, EU Claims of Anti-US, Anti-West Plot

China has dismissed allegations by former U.S. President Donald Trump and European Union diplomat Kaja Kallas that it is conspiring with Russia and North Korea to challenge the West. The accusations followed a large military parade in Beijing marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, where Chinese President Xi Jinping was joined by Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote: “Give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against The United States of America.” Responding on Thursday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said the presence of foreign leaders at the event was meant to honor history and promote peace. “It is to work together with peace-loving countries to remember history, cherish the martyrs, and create the future. EU Slams Russia After Deadly Missile Strikes on Kyiv

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has condemned Russia’s deadliest attack on Kyiv since July, which killed 17 people, including four children, and damaged the EU’s delegation office in the Ukrainian capital. A five-storey residential block in the Darnytskyi district collapsed after being struck by a missile in the early hours of Thursday. Ukrainian officials said many of the victims were trapped inside their homes, with rescue workers digging through rubble to search for survivors. Three of the children killed were aged two, 14 and 17. Von der Leyen described the bombardment as “another grim reminder” of Russia’s intent to terrorise civilians, noting that two missiles landed just 50 metres from the EU delegation. Images shared by EU officials showed shattered windows and ceilings torn down at the mission’s Kyiv office. The British Council, housed in the same block, […]
