Court adjourns Tukur Mamu’s fundamental rights suit against AGF

Justice Mohammed Umar fixed the new date for adoption of final written addresses after asking counsel to further address the court on the relationship between Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution and Section 49 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022. The matter had earlier come up for adoption of written addresses but could not proceed. Mamu, through his lawyer Johnson Usman (SAN), argues that the AGF’s decision to label him a terrorist in official and media communications violates his right to presumption of innocence under Section 36(5) of the Constitution. He contends that it is illegal, immoral and against religious principles to brand him a terrorist before any conviction by the court where he is facing trial. Usman told the court that he attached printouts of media reports where Mamu was described as a terrorist to support the […]

DSS witness: Rescued Abuja Kaduna train victims petitioned Tukur Mamu

A Department of State Services investigator has told the Federal High Court in Abuja that several victims rescued from the 2022 Abuja Kaduna train attack submitted written complaints against alleged terrorist negotiator Tukur Mamu. The operative, who testified as the sixth prosecution witness and gave evidence behind a screen for security reasons, made the disclosure while being cross examined by Mamu’s lead counsel, Johnson Usman, SAN. Asked if any of the rescued victims, including the wife of the Commandant in Jaji, lodged complaints against Mamu, he replied in the affirmative and confirmed the complaints were in writing. DSS lawyer David Kaswe urged the court to stop the defence from asking questions that might reveal the identities of victims or witnesses, reminding the court that an order for their protection had been granted. Usman argued that none of the names he […]

Court fixes Jan 22 for Sowore’s trial over Tinubu tweet

The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed January 22 for the start of the trial of Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore over alleged false claims against President Bola Tinubu. Justice Mohammed Umar set the date after Sowore pleaded not guilty to a two count amended charge filed by the Department of State Services. In the amended charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2025 and filed on December 5, Sowore is listed as the only defendant. X Inc, formerly Twitter, and Meta, owner of Facebook, which were earlier joined as second and third defendants, were removed from the case at the request of the prosecution. The DSS alleges that on or about August 25 2025, Sowore used his X handle @YeleSowore to post a message accusing Tinubu of falsely claiming in Brazil that there was no more corruption under his government. Prosecutors say he […]

Alleged Cybercrime: Judge’s Absence Stalls Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Trial

The trial of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, facing six counts of alleged cybercrime, was postponed at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday as Justice Mohammed Umar was absent. The adjournment shifts proceedings to February 4, 2026. Previous hearings were delayed due to defense objections and protests demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu. Akpoti-Uduaghan stands accused of transmitting false and injurious electronic information, allegedly inciting violence and maligning political figures, including claims against the Senate President and the former governor of Kogi State. The case falls under the Cybercrimes Amendment Act 2024, with ongoing disputes over court jurisdiction, the nature of prosecutorial powers, and witness statement procedures.
