WAEC links sharp decline in 2025 WASSCE Core Mathematics results to student skill gaps

The Head of Public Relations at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), John Kapi, says the steep drop in Core Mathematics performance in the 2025 WASSCE is linked to clear skill gaps among candidates. Speaking on the JOY Super Morning Show, he outlined seven areas where students struggled the most. These included representing mathematical information in diagrams, solving global math-related problems, constructing cumulative frequency tables, making deductions from real-life scenarios, solving simple interest questions, converting word problems into mathematical expressions, and interpreting results from cumulative frequency data. WAEC Delays Release of WASSCE Results for Over 460,000 Candidates.

The release of the 2024 WASSCE results for 460,611 candidates is facing delays as the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) awaits funds from the Ministry of Education. The GH¢118 million owed is crucial for repairing or replacing scanners needed to process objective test cards. According to WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, breakdowns in the council’s scanners have stalled the process. He urged examination officials and suppliers to remain patient as efforts are underway to resolve the funding issues. The exams, conducted from August 5 to September 20, 2024, involved 1,003 schools and marked Ghana’s third time hosting the WASSCE exclusively.
