Iran shuts Strait of Hormuz again amid war talks

Iran’s military has again declared the Strait of Hormuz closed, only hours after briefly reopening the vital waterway to commercial traffic. The move has renewed uncertainty over efforts to reach a peace deal in the ongoing US Israeli war with Iran. Tehran announced on Friday that the strait which normally carries about one fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments was open following a ceasefire in Lebanon that paused Israel’s war with Hezbollah. That decision sent oil prices sharply lower and raised hopes of easing tensions. However, Iran warned it would shut the strait again as long as the United States maintained a naval blockade of Iranian ports. On Saturday, state TV quoted the country’s military central command as saying control of the strait had returned to its previous status and was under strict management by the armed […]

US says it is optimistic about reaching peace deal with Iran

The United States is exploring a second round of peace talks with Iran in Pakistan and is “optimistic” about reaching a deal to end the ongoing war, US officials have said. A Pakistani delegation has arrived in Tehran with a new message from Washington after US President Donald Trump signalled that negotiations could resume this week, following last weekend’s failed talks in Islamabad. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that any further discussions would “very likely” take place again in Islamabad, adding: “Those discussions are being had, and we feel good about the prospects of a deal.” The renewed diplomatic push comes as Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif intensifies shuttle diplomacy, including a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to support efforts to end the six‑week conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States. US Vice […]

US denies agreeing to unfreeze Iran assets

A senior United States official has denied a report that Washington agreed to unfreeze Iranian assets held in Qatar and other foreign banks as part of ongoing talks with Tehran. The denial came after an unnamed Iranian source told Reuters that the US had consented to releasing the frozen funds in return for safe passage for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. In a message from the White House, a senior US official dismissed the report as false, stressing that the meetings between both sides had not even started at the time the claim was made. Iran and the US have sent delegations to Islamabad, Pakistan, for talks aimed at ending the wider war in the Middle East. Tehran has publicly insisted that any permanent ceasefire must include unfreezing its sanctioned assets and an end to Israel’s war on Hezbollah […]

Five key facts about the US Iran talks in Pakistan

The United States and Iran are holding their highest level talks in years in Islamabad, Pakistan, in a bid to turn a fragile two week ceasefire into a lasting end to the war that has shaken global energy markets. The war behind the talksOn February 28, the US and Israel launched coordinated strikes that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and hit key military and nuclear sites, with more than 2,000 people killed in five weeks. Tehran responded by effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway through which about a fifth of global oil and gas passes, pushing energy prices higher and disrupting trade. On April 8, Pakistan brokered a two week ceasefire between Washington and Tehran, with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council saying the talks could last up to 15 days and the truce expected to expire […]

US backs Orbán as Hungary faces tight election

With just days to go before Hungary’s elections, the campaign has taken on an international dimension as JD Vance publicly backed Prime Minister Viktor Orbán during a visit to Budapest. Standing alongside Orbán, Vance said he was in the Hungarian capital to support him ahead of the vote, while adding that the United States would ultimately work with whichever candidate emerges victorious. His intervention comes at a critical moment, with opposition leader Péter Magyar leading in most opinion polls. US backing and EU criticism During his visit, Vance delivered strong criticism of the European Union, accusing it of interfering in Hungary’s electoral process. He described actions from Brussels as “disgraceful,” echoing earlier remarks he made in Europe about free speech and governance. Orbán, a long-time ally of Donald Trump, has positioned himself in opposition to EU policies, particularly regarding support […]

Rubio Reassures Europe at Munich Summit

Marco Rubio drew intense scrutiny at the Munich Security Conference, as European leaders watched closely for signals about the trajectory of transatlantic relations under Donald Trump. Although Rubio’s remarks did not entirely dispel European unease, they were broadly interpreted as an effort to reassure allies that strains in US-Europe relations would not amount to a rupture. His tone contrasted with last year’s sharper rhetoric from JD Vance, whose speech had openly criticised European political and cultural trends. Rubio, however, was not the only American voice seeking to steady nerves in Munich. A sizable bipartisan delegation of US lawmakers and governors attended the summit, including several Democrats widely seen as potential contenders for the 2028 presidential nomination. Among them was Gavin Newsom, who underscored the temporality of the current administration. “Donald Trump is temporary. He’ll be gone in three years,” he […]

Rubio urges calmer US Europe ties as Trump era shocks strain Munich security talks

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says ties between the United States and Europe have reached a defining moment as leaders gather for the Munich Security Conference. Speaking before the meeting in Germany, Rubio said the old world order is gone and a new era in geopolitics is emerging that will force both sides to rethink their roles. He stressed that the United States and Europe remain deeply linked and must discuss how to shape their shared future. The annual forum in Munich comes after years of turbulence under President Donald Trump, whose harsh rhetoric and disruptive policies have shaken U.S. alliances. European partners have watched Washington topple Venezuela’s leader, threaten other Latin American governments, impose tariffs on allies and rivals and even talk about annexing Greenland from NATO partner Denmark. Last year at Munich, Vice President JD Vance clashed […]

Top Iranian adviser meets Oman as US talks near

A top adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader has held talks in Oman as Tehran and Washington prepare for a new round of negotiations aimed at avoiding fresh conflict. Oman hosted indirect talks between Iran and the United States last week, which Tehran says showed enough common ground to keep diplomacy alive. Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the discussions in Oman allowed Iran to gauge how serious the US is about reaching an agreement. He said Ali Larijani’s visit to Muscat was planned in advance and that the senior adviser would travel next to Qatar, another key Gulf mediator. The latest contacts come after President Donald Trump sent a US naval flotilla to the region, raising fears of possible military action against Iran. Trump had threatened to intervene during a bloody crackdown on nationwide protests in Iran last year but […]

One year on, US-Europe security ties face deep uncertainty

One year after a controversial speech by US Vice-President JD Vance at the Munich Security Conference, transatlantic relations remain under severe strain. In February last year, Vance stunned his audience by accusing Europe of undermining itself through its migration and free speech policies, arguing that the continent’s greatest threat came from within. Since then, the Trump administration has profoundly reshaped global politics. Over the past year, Washington has imposed punitive tariffs on both allies and rivals, carried out an audacious operation in Venezuela, pushed uneven peace efforts in Ukraine widely seen as favourable to Moscow, and even suggested that Canada should become the “51st state” of the United States. These moves have unsettled partners and rivals alike. As the Munich Security Conference opens again later this week, expectations are high. The US delegation will be led by Secretary of State […]

Italy rules out ICE police role at Winter Games

Italy has ruled out any operational police role for United States immigration agency ICE during the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, following public anger over its planned presence. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi told parliament that only the Homeland Security Investigations arm of ICE will be in Italy and that its staff will work inside United States diplomatic missions. He stressed they are not operational agents and have no powers to carry out law enforcement activities on Italian soil. Piantedosi said criticism and fears about their role at the Games were completely unfounded. He explained that HSI focuses on global threats such as the illegal movement of people, goods and weapons and is separate from the part of ICE that leads the controversial immigration crackdown in the United States. The minister noted it is standard practice for countries to send security […]
