Court sentences ex-power minister Saleh Mamman to 75 years over ₦33.8bn fraud

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, to 75 years in prison after finding him guilty of diverting about ₦33.8 billion in public funds. Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment on Wednesday, convicting Mamman on all 12 counts of money laundering and fraud brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The court held that the EFCC proved beyond reasonable doubt that Mamman diverted funds earmarked for key national power projects, including the Mambilla and Zungeru Hydroelectric Power schemes. Investigators told the court that large sums were moved through contractors and cronies before being traced to the former minister’s personal accounts and assets. Justice Omotosho noted that Mamman personally benefited from the fraud, including the cash payment of 655,700 dollars (about ₦200 million) for a property in Abuja, in […]

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has convicted former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, on charges of fraud and money laundering involving about N33.8 billion. Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment on Thursday, ruling that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. Mamman, who served as power minister under former President Muhammadu Buhari from 2019 to 2021, was prosecuted on a 12 count charge bordering on conspiracy and laundering of funds earmarked for the Mambilla and Zungeru hydroelectric power projects. The EFCC alleged that he conspired with some ministry officials to divert billions of naira from accounts linked to the projects. In his judgment, Justice Omotosho held that evidence from 17 prosecution witnesses and 43 documentary exhibits showed that large sums were diverted and laundered through various companies and individuals connected to the former […]

High Court rules FCCPC can probe customers’ complaints against banks, other financial institutions

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has the power to investigate consumers’ complaints against banks and other financial institutions. The court, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, dismissed a suit filed by United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, which had challenged the Commission’s jurisdiction in matters involving a commercial bank licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). UBA’s case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1972/2025, was thrown out in its entirety and the bank was fined N2 million for filing what the judge described as a frivolous and unmeritorious action. FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Tunji Bello, hailed the judgment as “a big victory for bank customers,” saying it strengthens advocacy for consumer rights in the financial sector. In its statement signed by Corporate Affairs Director Ondaje Ijagwu, the Commission explained […]

A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced former acting Accountant General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Nwabuoku, to eight years in prison after finding him guilty of N868 million money laundering charges. Justice James Omotosho ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission proved all nine counts against Nwabuoku beyond reasonable doubt, as required by law. He rejected any option of fine and ordered that the eight year sentence on each count should run concurrently. The judge described Nwabuoku’s conduct as appalling, noting that he diverted funds meant for security and defence while serving as Director of Finance and Accounts in the Ministry of Defence between 2019 and 2021. Justice Omotosho praised the EFCC for the detailed manner in which it handled the prosecution. He also pointed out that evidence from one of the prosecution witnesses, that Nwabuoku voluntarily refunded […]

Court clears Abba Kyari in asset non declaration case

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the non declaration of assets case filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency against suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari and his two brothers. Delivering judgment, Justice James Omotosho held that the NDLEA failed to provide sufficient and credible evidence to prove that Kyari owned the properties and funds listed in the charge sheet. The judge ruled that the prosecution did not tender documents clearly linking Kyari to several properties in Abuja and Maiduguri, or to the bank accounts said to contain over N207 million and 17,598 euros. He noted that under the law, ownership of landed property must be proved through title documents, traditional history or clear acts of possession, but the NDLEA did not meet this requirement in court. Justice Omotosho also accepted Kyari’s explanation that some of […]

Why I won’t defend FG’s charge against me – Nnamdi Kanu

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has announced that he will no longer defend the seven-count terrorism-related charge brought against him by the Federal Government, describing the case as “invalid and unlawful.” At the resumed hearing before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, Kanu, who previously chose to represent himself after disengaging his legal team, told the court that he found no valid charge in the case file that warranted a defence. Kanu said, “Having reviewed the entire case, I discovered there is no valid charge to defend. Since I am being subjected to an unlawful trial, I see no reason to defend myself or call witnesses.” Following this declaration, the IPOB leader withdrew his earlier request for the court to summon several high-profile individuals as witnesses, including Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo […]
