Germany urges citizens to leave Iran over security risks
Germany has advised its citizens to immediately leave Iran, citing possible retaliation from Tehran following Berlin’s role in activating United Nations sanctions linked to Iran’s nuclear programme. On Thursday, Germany, alongside Britain and France, initiated a 30-day process to reimpose U.N. sanctions on Iran, a move that is expected to heighten tensions in the region. The decision comes just two months after Israel and the United States carried out airstrikes against Iran. In a statement published on its official website, Germany’s Foreign Ministry warned that Iranian authorities had repeatedly threatened consequences over the sanctions push. “As Iranian government representatives have repeatedly threatened with consequences in this case, it cannot be ruled out that German interests and nationals will be affected by countermeasures in Iran,” the ministry said.
