Terrorists on the move after US missile strikes as experts warn of fresh risks

Suspected terrorists in northern Nigeria are reportedly relocating from their bases following US missile attacks carried out on Christmas night. Community leaders told Sunday Punch that they observed movements as armed groups began leaving known hideouts in small numbers after the strikes. President Donald Trump had announced that the US military launched deadly strikes against Islamic State terrorists in northwestern Nigeria. The Federal Government confirmed it gave support for the operation, which targeted locations used by the militants. No deaths were recorded at the two locations hit by missiles at Jabo in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State and Offa in Kwara State, where a projectile struck a farmland and some buildings. Officials in Tangaza LGA, however, said further strikes were carried out on suspected Lakurawa armed group hideouts in parts of Sokoto, leading to injuries and destruction of […]

Sowore condemns US airstrikes on Nigerian soil

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has strongly criticised the recent United States military strikes on Nigerian soil. He described the attacks as a violation of Nigeria’s sovereignty and a dangerous step for the country. Sowore argued that no foreign country has the right to launch military operations inside Nigeria under any guise. He said allowing such actions sends a signal that Nigeria cannot protect itself and is willing to hand over its security to external powers. He also faulted the Nigerian government for what he called weakness and complicity. According to him, the authorities should have openly rejected the US airstrikes instead of agreeing to or tolerating them. Sowore warned that foreign military involvement rarely solves internal security problems. He pointed to past US interventions in countries like Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan, saying they often left […]

Gumi asks FG to halt military cooperation with US over ISIS bombing

Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Mahmoud Gumi has called on the Federal Government to immediately suspend all military cooperation with the United States following US airstrikes on ISIS targets in Nigeria. He warned that continued American involvement could worsen insecurity and undermine Nigeria’s national sovereignty. Gumi made his position known in a statement shared on his Facebook page. He argued that while Islam allows the fight against terrorism, such operations must be carried out by what he described as clean hands, insisting that the US lacks the moral authority to lead counterterrorism efforts because of its global military record. According to him, Nigeria made a mistake by allowing foreign powers to play a direct role in its security operations. He said foreign military interventions often come with hidden political interests and can lead to civilian casualties. Gumi also cautioned that […]

US Nigeria Near Strategic Security Deal Amid Christian Genocide Claims

United States congressman Riley Moore has disclosed that Washington and Abuja are close to finalising a strategic framework on insecurity following a series of meetings in Nigeria. Moore led a US delegation on a fact finding mission to review claims of Christian genocide and broader concerns about religious persecution and terrorism in the country. Speaking after talks with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and other senior officials, Moore said both sides had agreed on practical steps that could strengthen Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, banditry and communal violence. He described the engagement as constructive and said the proposed framework is now in its final stages. According to him, the emerging plan focuses on improving intelligence sharing, building early warning systems, boosting protection for at risk communities and tightening accountability for human rights abuses linked to security operations. Turji Alleges Two Ex Governors Are Fuelling Insecurity

Notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has claimed in a viral video that two former governors from Zamfara and Sokoto states bear major responsibility for the insecurity ravaging parts of northern Nigeria. He accused the past administrations of laying the groundwork for today’s violence through decisions he said worsened tensions and communal distrust. Turji alleged that the former leaders armed local vigilante groups, popularly called Yan Banga, in ways that he claims targeted Fulani communities and escalated reprisals. According to him, those policies turned what should have been community protection initiatives into forces that deepened ethnic and social divisions. In the same video, Turji addressed controversy over his past contacts with the Zamfara State government when Bello Matawalle, now Minister of State for Defence, was governor. He admitted taking part in peace talks with the then administration but denied receiving a […]

US Nigeria Near Security Deal After Christian Genocide Row

The Federal Government and a visiting United States congressional delegation led by Congressman Riley Moore are close to finalising a new strategic framework to address insecurity across Nigeria. The talks follow months of tension over claims by some US lawmakers and lobby groups that Christians in Nigeria are facing genocide, an allegation Abuja strongly rejects. Moore, who has been one of the most vocal critics of Nigeria’s handling of attacks on Christian communities, said the latest meetings in Abuja with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and other officials were “productive and positive”. He disclosed that both sides discussed concrete actions which, if fully carried out, could significantly enhance security nationwide. According to Moore, the emerging framework focuses on strengthening intelligence sharing, improving early warning systems, supporting communities vulnerable to terrorism and farmer herder violence, and tightening accountability for security abuses. Rising Insecurity Pushes Nigeria Closer To State Police Model

Debate over state police has entered a new phase in Nigeria as worsening insecurity and growing public frustration force political leaders to consider concrete changes to the country’s policing system. Many analysts now believe the State Police Constitution Alteration Bill has a strong chance of becoming law, given open backing from President Bola Tinubu and several state governors. Supporters of state police argue that a single, centralised Nigeria Police Force can no longer adequately respond to diverse security challenges across a vast and complex country. They say decentralised forces will bring law enforcement closer to communities, improve response times and allow better understanding of local terrain, culture and crime patterns. Security experts quoted in recent discussions outline a likely structure in which each state would establish its own police service under a constitutional framework. These forces are expected to operate […]

Lai Mohammed Urges Nigerians To Back Tinubu On Insecurity

Former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has called on Nigerians to give stronger support to President Bola Tinubu’s administration in its efforts to tackle insecurity. He said the scale and complexity of today’s security threats make it impossible for government and security agencies to succeed without active citizen cooperation. Speaking in an interview, Mohammed noted that the Tinubu government has introduced several measures to curb terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes. However, he argued that these steps will only produce lasting results if communities share information, resist propaganda and stop shielding criminals. He criticised what he described as a growing tendency to politicise security issues and to downplay government successes while amplifying failures. According to him, such attitudes embolden violent groups and weaken the morale of security personnel risking their lives on the frontlines. Mohammed urged […]
