FG orders seizure of passports from ex Nigerians
The Federal Government has ordered the Nigeria Immigration Service to immediately withdraw and deactivate passports held by Nigerians who have formally renounced their citizenship. Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji Ojo gave the directive to the NIS, targeting people whose renunciation requests have already been approved by the President. This means they can no longer legally hold or use Nigerian passports once the process is completed. His media aide Alao Babatunde said the order is based on Section 29 subsections 1 and 2 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which states that any Nigerian of full age can renounce citizenship by making a formal declaration, and that the person ceases to be a citizen once the President registers that declaration.
