JUST IN: Akpabio, Oshiomhole clash as Senate tightens leadership rules

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Edo North senator Adams Oshiomhole clashed on the floor of the Senate after the upper chamber amended its standing rules to tighten eligibility for top leadership positions. The changes are widely seen as reshaping the race for the 2027 Senate presidency and other principal offices. Under the amended rules, only ranking lawmakers with defined legislative experience will be eligible to contest for presiding roles such as Senate President and Deputy Senate President. The new provisions also bar first term senators and those without at least two consecutive terms from vying for principal offices. APC targets rancour free primaries with revised timetable

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has unveiled a revised timetable for its primaries and says it is working towards rancour free exercises across the states ahead of the next general election. The APC also confirmed that its electronic membership register has been transmitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in line with the Electoral Act, which restricts participation in primaries to members on the list. Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other party leaders say early submission of the register […]

Kanu said, “Having reviewed the entire case, I discovered there is no valid charge to defend. Since I am being subjected to an unlawful trial, I see no reason to defend myself or call witnesses.” Following this declaration, the IPOB leader withdrew his earlier request for the court to summon several high-profile individuals as witnesses, including Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo […]
