Insecurity in Yorubaland: Is Amotekun Still Effective in South-West?

Four years after its creation, the regional security outfit Amotekun (Operation Leopard) is still grappling with the hydra-headed security challenges in Nigeria’s South-West, as kidnappings, killings, and banditry continue to surge across Yorubaland. When the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN), codenamed Operation Amotekun, was set up in 2020, it was launched with fanfare and optimism that it would tame the rising insecurity plaguing the Southwest. Four years on, however, stakeholders believe there has been a surge in crime and criminality within the region. Armed men kill ex councillor, four others in midnight attack on Benue community

Armed men have killed a former councillor and four other people in a midnight attack on a farming community in Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State. The incident happened in the early hours of Monday when the gunmen stormed the area, shooting sporadically and forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes.​ Local sources identified the ex councillor as Iorhen Iorbue, a prominent community figure. Troops Arrest Two Herders Destroying Crops During Benue Farmland Patrol

Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke have arrested two herders found trespassing and destroying crops on community farmlands in Makurdi, Benue State, during routine farm protection patrols. The incident, confirmed by OPWS spokesman Lt. Ahmad Zubairu, occurred on November 20, 2025, at Zongo Akiki. The vigilant intervention by troops prevented further damage and possible clashes between herders and local farmers. The suspects are in custody, with investigations and legal proceedings underway. Force Commander Maj. Gen. Moses Gara commended the professionalism of his troops and advised the public against taking the law into their own hands. He urged dialogue and lawful action to resolve disputes, warning that violence only escalates tensions.
