PFAG Questions NAFCO Over GHC 100 Million Grain Purchase Fund

The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) is urging the government to clarify how the GHC 100 million released to the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) was utilized for purchasing surplus grains from farmers across the country. The fund, announced earlier this year, was meant to stabilize food prices and help farmers offload excess maize, rice, and other staples. But several months later, many farmers say they have not seen any evidence of direct purchases or financial support. PFAG’s Executive Director, Bismark Owusu Nortey, voiced concern about the situation: “I have not had any report from farmers saying they have sold their produce to NAFCO, which is why we are worried about where the GHC 100 million went.” Nortey acknowledged that some NAFCO-branded rice has been seen on the market but noted the lack of transparent data identifying which […]

Elikem Kotoko Wants Akufo-Addo Prosecuted Over National Cathedral ‘Organised Crime’ Allegations

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Elikem Kotoko, says he would welcome the sight of former President Nana Akufo-Addo being “hauled to court” over what he describes as financial irregularities and organised corruption linked to the construction of the National Cathedral. Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Kotoko accused the former president of masterminding what he called “an organised crime unit set up to siphon or launder state funds” under the guise of a religious project. “Let me be frank with you, if wishes were horses, I would be happy to see even former president Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo being hauled to court to answer for that hole he dug, which seems to be an organised crime unit that he set up to siphon or launder state funds,” he said. Kotoko drew a sharp contrast between Akufo-Addo’s actions and […]

Bright Simons Blasts Intermediaries Over GH¢7bn Leak in Ghana’s Gold-for-Oil Programme

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, has sharply criticised the use of intermediaries in Ghana’s Gold-for-Oil programme, following a new report by the think tank that revealed a GH¢7 billion leakage. Speaking on JoyNews’s Newsfile, Mr. Simons said the intended beneficiaries—the Ghanaian public—did not gain from the initiative. Instead, he claimed, a network of brokers and middlemen reaped significant profits from the monetisation process. “The eventual beneficiaries of this case were the brokers and the middlemen,” Mr. Simons stated. “The only people who got any benefit are those who were in the middle during the monetisation, enabling the shipment of the fuel to BOST and others.” He argued that Ghana could have met its objectives through a simpler, more transparent approach—without relying on opaque and costly intermediaries. “Ghana could simply have said, we have our domestic gold purchasing programme, […]

Residents of Western Region Demand Completion of Abandoned School Projects.

Residents of the Western Region, particularly in the Shama District, are raising concerns over the increasing number of abandoned infrastructure projects, especially in the education sector. Opinion leaders are calling on authorities to prioritize the completion of stalled school projects, as these delays negatively impact teaching and learning. One example is the Ohiamadwen D/A Primary, where a teachers' bungalow started under the NDC government in 2015 was abandoned following their loss in the 2016 elections. Another is a three-unit classroom block for Assorko Junior High School, initiated by former MP Ato Panford and the Shama District Assembly in 2019. This project was left unfinished when Ato Panford lost the NPP primaries that same year. Additionally, a polyclinic intended to serve over 68,000 people has been stuck at 85% completion since 2004. In the community of Asmoro Essaman, which has grown […]
