Gold Board CEO denies galamsey claims, backs anti-mining fight
Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has dismissed suggestions that the newly established body is promoting illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. “Let me clear some misconceptions that GoldBod is promoting galamsey. And my simple question to them is: how can a five-month-old statutory corporation be responsible for an age-long problem?” he said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, during a discussion on the government’s fight against illegal mining. Mr. Gyamfi emphasized that galamsey existed long before GoldBod and had already reached alarming levels before the institution was set up. “Last year there was no GoldBod, but we saw widespread protests against galamsey because the problem had reached unprecedented levels.
