Ghana’s Thomas Partey pleads not guilty to rape charges in UK court

Ghana and Villarreal midfielder Thomas Partey on Wednesday pleaded not guilty to multiple rape and sexual assault charges during a brief appearance at Southwark Crown Court in London. The 32-year-old former Arsenal player faces five counts of rape and one charge of sexual assault, relating to incidents alleged to have taken place between 2021 and 2022, while he was still at the Premier League club. Partey, who joined Villarreal in August after his Arsenal contract expired, was charged four days after leaving the Gunners. At the hearing, Partey spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth before entering not guilty pleas. Judge Christopher Hehir confirmed his trial is scheduled for November 2, 2026, noting court backlogs meant a lengthy wait. “You are on bail, which means you sit behind a queue of people in prison waiting to be […]

Ghana accepts Nigerians, other West Africans deported from US

Ghana has begun receiving West African nationals deported from the United States, including Nigerians, President John Dramani Mahama announced on Wednesday. According to Reuters, Mahama confirmed that a first batch of 14 deportees — comprising Nigerians, a Gambian, and other West Africans — had already landed in Accra, with Ghanaian authorities assisting in their repatriation to their respective countries. “We were approached by the US to accept third-party nationals who were being removed from the US, and we agreed with them that West African nationals were acceptable because all our fellow West Africans don’t need a visa to come to our country,” Mahama explained. He added that the arrangement was logical since ECOWAS citizens already enjoy visa-free access to Ghana. The development comes amid Washington’s intensified deportation drive under President Donald Trump, who has expanded removals to “third countries” as […]

Cocoa Farmers Advised to Save During Harvest to Break Debt Cycle

Cocoa farmers have been advised to adopt a savings culture during the peak harvest season to protect themselves from financial hardships and reduce dependence on loans during the lean season. Industry experts warn that the growing reliance on borrowing in off-seasons often pushes farmers into crippling debt, destabilising farming households and threatening livelihoods. Speaking at a capacity-building workshop for women in the cocoa value chain at Nkrankwanta, District Cocoa Officer Johnson Asumah cautioned against reckless spending and stressed the need for prudent financial management. He said saving during harvest time is critical for breaking the cycle of debt. The workshop, which brought together over 300 women, also introduced participants to alternative livelihoods including organic pesticide production, fish farming, snail rearing, and soap making. Community Extension Agent Mercy Bempomaa Oduro-Gyan highlighted the importance of income diversification, saying it would enable women […]
