The Falconets of Nigeria made a fiery statement in their opener of the WAFU B U-20 Girls’ Cup, overpowering Ghana 3-1 at the Omnisport Stadium, Adjouhoun, Benin Republic. Janet Akekoromowei lit up the game with a first-half brace—scoring a cool penalty in the 37th minute and adding a poacher’s finish in stoppage time—to put Nigeria 2-0 ahead at halftime. Ghana fought back with a goal from Sarah Nyarko just after the restart, but Nigeria’s Favour Chiamaka sealed the victory, curling in a stunning strike direct from a corner with two minutes left. Coach Moses Aduku’s side now lead the tournament, which is reduced to a round-robin between three teams after Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso withdrew. The Falconets will face hosts Benin Republic next, knowing another win brings them close to the title. This result also avenges last year’s defeat […]

Ghana’s Health System in Crisis: LHIMS Shutdown Paralyzes Patient Care Nationwide

Ghana’s healthcare faces chaos after the Lightwave Health Information Management System (LHIMS) shutdown. Doctors lose access to patient data dating back to 2020, crippling hospitals nationwide. Major Digital Health Breakdown Hits Ghana Ghana’s healthcare delivery has been thrown into disarray after the Lightwave Health Information Management System (LHIMS) — the digital backbone of public hospitals — abruptly went offline. The shutdown, now stretching into several weeks, has made medical records dating back to 2020 inaccessible across multiple facilities. Doctors and nurses have been forced to revert to manual record-keeping using exercise books and patient folders. The sudden shift is slowing down care, increasing waiting times, and putting thousands of lives at risk. Government Responds With New Digital Platform Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has confirmed that the government will roll out a new Ghana Health Information Management System (GHIMS) to […]

Ghana’s PAC urges EPA to shut down petrol and gas stations in residential areas over safety concerns

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Ghana’s Parliament has called on the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to take decisive action against individuals and companies operating petrol and gas stations within residential communities. The Committee warned that these practices pose severe safety hazards and could have catastrophic consequences in the event of a fire or explosion. During a recent committee session, Acting Chair Samuel Atta Mills described the situation as both “alarming and unacceptable,” urging the EPA to strengthen enforcement and protect lives and property. “The dangers in siting petrol and gas stations within residential communities are real and deadly in times of emergencies. Such actions must not be entertained,” Atta Mills stated. He further called on the EPA to tighten its licensing procedures, noting that some operators exploit loopholes and allegedly […]

NSMQ Quarter-Final Postponed After Crowd Surge at Cape Coast Venue

Organisers of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), Primetime Limited, have postponed the third quarter-final contest in Cape Coast after a massive crowd surge disrupted proceedings and created serious safety risks. The contest, scheduled for Thursday, October 30, 2025, at the University of Cape Coast’s School of Graduate Studies Auditorium, was to feature three powerhouse schools — Prempeh College, Adisadel College, and Mfantsipim School. However, the event was brought to an abrupt halt when an overwhelming number of supporters forced their way into the auditorium, breaching security and overcrowding the venue. In an official statement, Primetime said that despite detailed planning and strong crowd-control measures, the situation became untenable, leaving organisers with no option but to call off the contest. “Calling off the contest was the safest decision, as we wished to prevent possible clashes among supporters, especially after […]

Ghana jails Nigerian man 10 years for trafficking sister, nine others

A Ghanaian court has sentenced a 29-year-old Nigerian man, Chukwudi Nwachukwu, to 10 years in prison for trafficking his younger sister and nine other girls from Nigeria to Ghana for prostitution. The victims, aged between 15 and 18, were deceived with promises of restaurant jobs but were forced into sex work upon arrival in Ghana. One of the victims was Nwachukwu’s own sister. Prosecutor Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Isaac Babayi told the court that the case began when Chief Calistus Eloziepuwa, a member of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) in Ghana, reported the incident and helped rescue the victims. According to Babayi, on June 7, 2024, the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of the Ghana Police Service received a report from the Nmai Dzorn Police Station that Nwachukwu had been arrested and the victims freed. Investigations showed that Nwachukwu […]

Mahama Warns Unregulated AI Threatens Global Information Integrity

President John Dramani Mahama has warned that the rapid and unregulated expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) poses a serious threat to global information integrity, cautioning that it could fuel misinformation and distort public discourse if left unchecked. Speaking at the International Conference on Information Integrity in Paris, Mahama said AI-powered tools such as deepfakes and algorithmic manipulation are reshaping how people perceive truth, making it increasingly difficult to separate fact from fiction. “If we’re to build a sustainable planet, we must also build an informed public,” he said. “The dawn of artificial intelligence has transformed the information landscape. While AI offers immense opportunities for innovation, it also amplifies the risk of misinformation and economic disruption.” The Ghanaian leader emphasized the need for collective global action to ensure that technology serves humanity rather than undermines it. “Deepfakes, synthetic media, and algorithmic […]

Agbogbloshie Residents Endure Extreme Heat and Toxic Air Amid Ghana’s Climate Push

As Ghana accelerates efforts to tackle climate change, national attention has largely focused on flood control and improved drainage systems. Yet, in Agbogbloshie—one of Accra’s most vulnerable and densely populated communities—residents are facing another silent but equally deadly threat: extreme urban heat compounded by toxic air pollution and overcrowded housing. Despite initiatives like the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development Project (GARID), which aim to enhance climate resilience in the capital, many argue that low-income neighborhoods like Agbogbloshie remain excluded from meaningful intervention. In Agbogbloshie, heat is not just an inconvenience—it’s a matter of survival. Narrow pathways, corrugated metal roofs, and poorly ventilated rooms trap unbearable temperatures, creating oven-like conditions that persist throughout the day and night. “My children have heat rashes every day. We pour water on the floor to cool the place, but it still feels like we’re […]

Unequal Climate Resilience: Odawna Residents Left Behind as Accra’s GARID Project Expands

As Ghana intensifies its efforts to combat climate change, the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development Project (GARID) is transforming parts of the capital with upgraded drainage systems, cleaner waterways, and better living conditions in flood-prone communities such as Nima, Alajo, and Akweteman. However, residents of Odawna, just a few kilometers away, say they have been overlooked. Recurrent floods and rising heatwaves continue to disrupt daily life there, exposing deep inequalities in the country’s climate resilience drive. GARID, supported by the World Bank and the Ministry of Works and Housing, was launched to protect vulnerable urban communities from flooding and climate-related shocks. In areas like Nima and Alajo, its impact is clear: new concrete drains, raised walkways, and improved waste management systems have reduced waterlogging and improved sanitation. Residents report safer neighborhoods and a visible decline in flood damage. In […]

Ghana Imposes Moratorium on Independent Biometric Systems to Strengthen Data Security

The Office of the President has placed an immediate freeze on the procurement and use of independent biometric Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS) across all government institutions. The directive, issued by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, marks a significant shift in how Ghana manages biometric and identification data. This decision isn’t just administrative — it’s a push toward efficiency, data protection, and digital standardization in government operations. Why the Ban Matters For years, different Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) have operated separate biometric systems, often running parallel databases for verification and identity management. This fragmented approach has been expensive, inconsistent, and a serious risk to data integrity. The new moratorium prohibits all MDAs and state institutions from: Developing or deploying independent biometric platforms. Running parallel biometric databases. Verifying identities using only visual […]
