Cocoa Farmers in Ghana Hoard Beans Amid Price Hike Anticipation.

Cocoa farmers in Ghana, the world's second-largest cocoa producer, are currently hoarding beans in anticipation of higher prices, as confirmed by industry sources to Reuters. This trend of stocking beans may impact the global cocoa supply, which is still recovering from a challenging harvest season. The extent of this hoarding remains unclear, but multiple farmers and officials from the state regulator Cocobod have noted a slowdown in bean purchases due to this practice. One farmer shared, “I have more than 300 bags, but I won’t sell. I will only sell after Christmas,” reflecting a collective hope that prices will rise. This behavior seems to stem from remarks made by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who suggested a potential increase in prices for farmers. Wele Prices Surge in Accra, Leaving Vendors and Consumers in a Dilemma.

The price of cowhide, commonly known as wele, has sharply increased in Accra, affecting both food vendors and consumers of the popular delicacy. The cost of a single piece of wele, which used to sell at GH¢3, now ranges between GH¢5 and GH¢25 in local eateries. Wholesalers in markets like Agbogbloshie and Kaneshie explained that the rise in import costs, high import duties, and exchange rate fluctuations have driven the price hike. While some vendors suggest food sellers could still profit without increasing prices, many sellers have raised wele prices to cover other food costs. The rising cost has become a concern for Ghanaians, particularly as wele is a favored addition to dishes like waakye. Nutritionists, however, advise against relying on wele as a primary protein source due to its low essential amino acid content and potential health risks from […]
