Iran says “good progress” made in Geneva nuclear talks with US

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says indirect nuclear negotiations with the United States have made “good progress”, as Washington reiterated that military action remains an option if diplomacy collapses. The latest round of talks, mediated by Oman, took place Tuesday in Geneva, amid heightened military posturing by both sides in the Gulf region. Agreement on “guiding principles” Speaking to Iranian state television after the meeting, Araghchi said both sides had reached a broad understanding on key principles that will shape the next phase of negotiations. “Ultimately, we were able to reach broad agreement on a set of guiding principles, based on which we will move forward and begin working on the text of a potential agreement,” he said. He described the discussions as an improvement on the previous round held in Oman earlier this month, adding that negotiators now have […]

Geneva talks end without Ukraine deal

Talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States aimed at ending Moscow’s war in Ukraine have ended without a decisive breakthrough. The trilateral negotiations, held in Geneva, stretched late into Tuesday and resumed briefly on Wednesday for about two hours. Despite earlier optimism from US envoy Steve Witkoff, both the Russian and Ukrainian sides described the discussions as challenging. According to a Ukrainian diplomatic source, limited progress was achieved on certain military matters, including discussions on the current front line and mechanisms for monitoring a potential ceasefire. However, the core dispute over territory — central to any lasting truce — remains unresolved, with positions in Moscow and Kyiv still significantly apart. Russia continues to insist on full control of the Donbas region, encompassing Donetsk and Luhansk, a demand Kyiv considers unacceptable. Chief Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky acknowledged the difficulty of […]

Geneva Talks Resume as Strikes Intensify

Russian and Ukrainian delegations are meeting in Geneva for another round of negotiations mediated by the United States, just days before the fourth anniversary of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Hopes for a major diplomatic breakthrough remain limited. Moscow has continued to insist on sweeping territorial concessions, while Kyiv has rejected any proposal that would formalize the loss of its land. Fighting on the ground has shown no sign of easing. In the hours before talks began in Switzerland, Russia launched a large-scale aerial assault across 12 Ukrainian regions, deploying roughly 400 drones and nearly 30 missiles. At least three people were reported killed. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the scale of the attack demonstrated Russia’s disregard for ongoing peace efforts. Russian officials, meanwhile, stated that air defence systems intercepted more than 150 Ukrainian drones. Authorities also […]

Iran’s foreign minister meets IAEA chief in Geneva before key US nuclear talks

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has met International Atomic Energy Agency director general Rafael Grossi in Geneva ahead of a second round of indirect nuclear talks with the United States. The meeting comes as both sides prepare to discuss sanctions relief and limits on Iran’s nuclear programme in negotiations starting Tuesday. Araghchi said on social media that he travelled to Geneva with a team of nuclear experts for “deep technical discussions” with the UN watchdog. He added that Iran has brought “concrete ideas” aimed at reaching what he called a fair and just agreement, while stressing that Tehran will not bow to threats. According to Xinhua and other reports, the talks with Grossi focused on technical issues around uranium enrichment levels, monitoring and the possible sequencing of steps Iran could take if sanctions are eased. Grossi described the exchange as […]
