Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has met International Atomic Energy Agency director general Rafael Grossi in Geneva ahead of a second round of indirect nuclear talks with the United States. The meeting comes as both sides prepare to discuss sanctions relief and limits on Iran’s nuclear programme in negotiations starting Tuesday.
Araghchi said on social media that he travelled to Geneva with a team of nuclear experts for “deep technical discussions” with the UN watchdog. He added that Iran has brought “concrete ideas” aimed at reaching what he called a fair and just agreement, while stressing that Tehran will not bow to threats.
According to Xinhua and other reports, the talks with Grossi focused on technical issues around uranium enrichment levels, monitoring and the possible sequencing of steps Iran could take if sanctions are eased. Grossi described the exchange as in depth and said it was part of preparations for “important” discussions between Iran and the United States.
The Geneva meetings follow an initial round of quiet contacts in Oman earlier this month, where US and Iranian envoys explored options to revive nuclear limits and prevent further escalation as US warships operate in the region. Western officials say they are trying to restore sufficient IAEA access to verify Iran’s stockpiles after months of restricted inspections.
Araghchi is also expected to meet Oman’s foreign minister Badr al Busaidi in Geneva before Tuesday’s talks. Analysts say Iran’s engagement with the IAEA is a key test of whether more formal steps towards a renewed nuclear deal are possible, or whether the standoff over inspections and enrichment will continue.
