Iran Players Honour School Strike Victims Before Nigeria Match
Iran’s national football team has paid tribute to victims of a deadly strike on a school by staging a silent protest before their friendly match against Nigeria. The game, played in Belek, Turkey, was Iran’s first outing since the wider Middle East conflict began. As the national anthem played, the Iranian players stood in a line wearing black armbands and holding children’s schoolbags in their hands. In front of them on the pitch, more schoolbags were laid out to symbolise the pupils who lost their lives. The gesture was in memory of the children and teachers killed when a school in the southern Iranian city of Minab was hit by a strike on February 28.
