MP Ablakwa Criticizes Lamens for ‘Criminal’ Actions in Expired Rice Scandal.
North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has condemned Lamens, the company implicated in the expired rice scandal, labeling their actions as a violation of Ghana’s Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851). Ablakwa accused the company of illegally re-bagging unwholesome rice imported from India and mislabeling it as “Made in Ghana.”Speaking on Joy FM, Ablakwa highlighted the public health risks posed by the company's activities, pointing out lapses in oversight by the National Buffer Stock Company, which allegedly allowed its facilities to be used for these illegal operations. The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) confirmed the violations and imposed fines, but Ablakwa insists stricter measures are needed to prevent future incidents. The scandal, involving 22,000 bags of expired rice, has drawn nationwide outrage, with calls for better food safety monitoring.
