Rising Costs and Poverty Hit Iranians Hard

Many Iranians are struggling to make ends meet as inflation and economic pressures continue to erode living standards across the country. Marjan, a crafts seller from Isfahan, says she and her husband can no longer afford small luxuries like eating out twice a month. For six years, she earned a living selling wooden crafts on Instagram, but an internet blackout during the nationwide protests in early January wiped out her income. Even after the internet returned, her monthly sales plummeted from 300 million rials ($185) to less than 30 million rials. The couple is considering selling their car just to keep up with rent and loan payments. Many families face similar hardships. Mina, a 44-year-old mother in Tehran, says food prices have more than doubled in recent months. Beef, which cost 7 million rials per kilo two months ago, recently […]

Ghana inflation falls to five year low

Ghana’s inflation rate eased to 3.8 percent in January, the lowest level since the consumer price index was rebased in 2021, extending a 13 month run of slowing price growth. Data from the Ghana Statistical Service showed prices rose by 0.2 percent compared with December, as both food and non food costs continued to moderate. Food inflation slowed to 3.9 percent year on year, while non food prices declined by 0.4 percent on a monthly basis. The steady fall in inflation has encouraged the Bank of Ghana to shift policy. The central bank cut its benchmark interest rate by 250 basis points to 15.50 percent last week to support economic growth while keeping prices under control. Officials say the disinflation trend has been driven by a stronger cedi, lower import costs and better food supply, backed by tighter monetary policy […]

Group hails Tinubu for youth inclusion, Southeast projects

The Southeast Renewed Hope Agenda has praised President Bola Tinubu for what it calls deliberate and commendable inclusion of young people in his cabinet. National Coordinator Belusomchukwu Enwere spoke in Enugu during the group’s Christmas food and palliatives outreach. Enwere said it is heart warming to see Nigerians under 40 actively involved in the administration, arguing that the old notion of youths as “leaders of tomorrow” is giving way to a reality where they now occupy positions of responsibility. He added that entrusting governance roles to young people shows the president’s confidence in their capacity and signals a positive shift in national leadership. The SERHA leader also commended Tinubu for initiatives targeted at the Southeast, especially the creation of the Southeast Development Commission, which he said reflects a commitment to inclusive development. He noted that the commission is expected to […]

Inflation will soon hit single digit, Presidency assures Nigerians

The Presidency has assured Nigerians that inflation will fall to a single digit soon, a development it says will make life easier for citizens. Special Adviser to the President on Economic Matters, Tope Fasua, gave the assurance on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief. Fasua said food prices are already beginning to stabilize as inflation eases, citing new figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). According to the NBS, headline inflation dropped to 20.12% in August 2025, down from 21.88% in July. On a monthly basis, headline inflation stood at 0.74%, while food inflation was 1.65%. Year-on-year, the figure was 12.03% lower than the 32.15% recorded in August 2024. “A 20.12 inflation is still large in many quarters because what it says is that prices are still increasing, but not as they used to be.
