Wizkid’s ‘Essence’ deserves a Grammy, says Onanuga

Presidential adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has hailed the global impact of Wizkid and Tems’ hit single “Essence”, saying the song deserves a Grammy Award. Reacting on X after their performance at Coachella 2026, Onanuga praised the track and questioned why it failed to clinch a Grammy despite its worldwide success. He was responding to viral clips of Wizkid and Tems joining Canadian pop star Justin Bieber on stage to perform the remix of “Essence” at the California festival. “Still wondering why Essence did not win a Grammy. Great song, great rhythm!” Onanuga wrote in his post. Released in 2020, “Essence” marked a major breakthrough for Afrobeats and Nigerian music on the global stage. The remix featuring Bieber reached the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number nine.
