Biafra Day: Umuahia Shuts Down as Residents Observe Sit-at-Home
Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, came to a complete standstill on May 30 as residents observed a total sit-at-home order to mark Biafra Remembrance Day (Biafra Day). The streets of Umuahia were virtually deserted, with shops, markets, motor parks, banks, and schools all shut down in full compliance with the sit-at-home directive issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in honour of fallen Biafra heroes and heroines. Only occasional movements of tricycles and a few vehicles were sighted on the empty roads. Some youths were seen playing soccer on deserted streets, while other residents gathered at the entrances of their premises, discussing national developments. No security agents were spotted parading the streets, and there were no reported clashes between security forces and IPOB supporters at the time of reporting.
