Rwanda accuses DR Congo, Burundi of breaking new peace deal

Rwanda has accused the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi of deliberately violating a ceasefire in eastern DR Congo just days after the three countries signed a US brokered peace agreement. Kigali’s foreign ministry said recent attacks in South Kivu “cannot be placed on Rwanda” and instead blamed the Congolese and Burundian armies for renewed violence near its border. In a statement, Rwanda alleged that DR Congo’s army FARDC and Burundi’s army FDNB have been systematically bombing civilian villages close to the Rwandan border using fighter jets and armed drones. It said M23 and allied AFC rebels had been “forced to counter” these operations, calling them deliberate violations of the Washington Accords signed on December 4. The renewed clashes come after Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi accused Rwanda earlier in the week of violating the same peace deal by shelling areas […]

Trump moves to end US birthright citizenship, says it was for slaves’ children

US President Donald Trump has again defended his bid to end birthright citizenship, claiming the constitutional guarantee was meant for the children of enslaved people, not for wealthy immigrants or temporary visitors. He argued that the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment, adopted after the Civil War, was designed for “the babies of slaves” and has since been “abused” by rich foreigners seeking US passports for their children. Trump signed an executive order on his first day back in office in January 2025, directing federal agencies to stop automatically recognising as citizens most children born in the US to non citizens. Under the order, babies born 30 days after his inauguration would no longer receive birthright citizenship if neither parent is a US citizen or permanent resident. Multiple federal courts quickly blocked the order, prompting a legal fight that has […]

Netanyahu to meet Trump on Gaza plan December 29

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet United States President Donald Trump on December 29 to discuss the next phase of the Gaza ceasefire plan. An Israeli government spokesperson, Shosh Bedrosian, confirmed the date and said the talks will focus on future steps, phases of the plan and a possible international stabilisation force. The meeting will take place in the United States, with Israeli and US media reporting that it is expected to be held either at the White House or at Trump’s Mar a Lago resort in Florida. It will be Netanyahu’s first visit to the US since the Trump administration brokered a ceasefire and hostage release that effectively ended two years of intense fighting in Gaza. Netanyahu has said he wants to use the talks to address the second phase of the US sponsored Gaza plan, including how […]

Zelensky meets Pope, refines response to new US peace plan

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has met Pope Leo XIV in Italy as he prepares an updated response to a revised United States plan to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The meeting took place at the Pope’s country residence in Castel Gandolfo near Rome, during a wider European tour focused on talks with allies about war and peace efforts. Zelensky said Washington had cut its original 28-point proposal to 20 points after intensive talks with Ukrainian officials over the weekend. He explained that Ukrainian and European negotiators will now work through those 20 points and that Kyiv will send its formal, revised position to the United States soon. According to Zelensky, the main obstacles in the US plan involve possible territorial concessions and the level of long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. He stressed that Ukraine has no legal or moral right […]

Trump questions Netflix’s $72bn Warner Bros deal over market dominance concerns

US President Donald Trump has signaled possible concerns about Netflix’s plan to acquire Warner Brothers Discovery’s movie studio and HBO streaming networks in a deal worth $72 billion. Speaking at an event in Washington DC, he noted that Netflix already holds a significant share of the market and suggested that combining the two companies “could be a problem.” Netflix and Warner Brothers announced on Friday that they had reached an agreement to bring major franchises such as Harry Potter and Game of Thrones under Netflix’s umbrella, a move that would reshape the global entertainment landscape. The deal still requires approval from competition regulators. The BBC has contacted Netflix, Warner Bros, and the White House for comment. Netflix, which began in 1997 as a DVD-by-mail service, has grown into the world’s largest subscription streaming platform. If approved, the merger would solidify […]

Trump unveils strategy to shift US military focus closer to home

President Donald Trump has released a new national security strategy that calls for a major realignment of United States military deployments around the world. The document proposes a “readjustment” of the US global military presence, moving more forces and assets toward the Western Hemisphere to tackle what it describes as urgent regional threats, including migration, drug cartels and instability in Latin America and the Caribbean. According to the strategy, the US will gradually scale back its footprint in some overseas theatres, while boosting Coast Guard and Navy patrols to control sea lanes, curb illegal and unwanted migration, and disrupt human and drug trafficking routes. The plan also places heavy emphasis on strengthening ties with governments across Latin America to secure strategic resources, expand US private sector investment and reinforce what the document frames as “Western identity” and traditional values. While […]

Trump sparks outrage after calling Somali immigrants ‘garbage’

United States President Donald Trump has sparked fresh outrage after describing Somali immigrants as “garbage” during a cabinet meeting at the White House. Trump reportedly claimed that Somali immigrants “contribute nothing” and said he did not want them in the United States, adding that they should go back to where they came from and “fix” their country. He also attacked Somalia itself, allegedly saying the country “stinks” and referring to it as a place where people “come from hell”, comments that critics have condemned as openly racist and dehumanising. The president further targeted Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar, a Somali‑born US lawmaker, labelling her “garbage” along with her allies, and accusing Somalis in Minnesota of abusing welfare and “ripping off” the state. Civil rights advocates, immigrant groups, and political opponents have condemned the remarks, warning that such language from the president […]

US Green Card Review Hits 10 African Countries

The United States government has ordered a sweeping review of all Green Cards issued to immigrants from 19 countries, including 10 in Africa, following the November 26 attack on National Guard troops in Washington, D.C. The Trump administration announced the move after the detained suspect was identified as a 29 year old Afghan who had previously worked with US forces and was granted asylum in April 2025, not permanent residency. In a directive posted on X, US Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Joseph Edlow said President Donald Trump had ordered a rigorous re examination of every Green Card held by immigrants from designated “countries of concern.” He stressed that protecting Americans was paramount and blamed what he described as the prior administration’s “reckless resettlement policies” for current risks. Under the new policy, USCIS officers can now apply “negative, country specific […]

Trump’s Moves on Nigeria Driven by Oil, Says Bakare

Pastor Tunde Bakare has claimed that President Donald Trump’s decision to list Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” and speak of Christian genocide is tied to a strategic push for Nigeria’s oil and other key assets. Speaking during a State of the Nation Address in Lagos, he said the Trump administration sees Nigeria’s oil wealth, mineral resources, real estate and role in emerging technologies as central to its foreign and economic agenda. Bakare said he believed Trump’s interest in Nigeria was confirmed by a vision he had shortly after Trump’s 2024 election victory, in which the US leader arrived in Lagos dressed in traditional Arab clothing and declared, “We are here now.” He interpreted this as a sign of deep economic and geopolitical interest linked to Middle East politics, oil and gas, property and Nigeria’s growing technology ecosystem, with […]

Ukrainian Team Heads to Florida for High Stakes US Talks

Senior Ukrainian negotiators have arrived in Florida for key talks with US officials as Washington steps up efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine. The delegation will meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential adviser Jared Kushner on Sunday. The meetings will focus on a revised 19 point peace plan backed by US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly said he wants the conflict to end quickly. The new outline replaces an earlier 28 point proposal that faced strong resistance in Kyiv and across Europe. Trump has signaled he could recognize Russian control over parts of Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk that are currently occupied by Moscow’s forces. This would leave Ukraine and its European partners to decide whether to keep supporting Ukraine’s defense or accept the new territorial reality. The Ukrainian team now includes […]
