Rwanda accuses DR Congo, Burundi of breaking new peace deal
Rwanda has accused the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi of deliberately violating a ceasefire in eastern DR Congo just days after the three countries signed a US brokered peace agreement. Kigali’s foreign ministry said recent attacks in South Kivu “cannot be placed on Rwanda” and instead blamed the Congolese and Burundian armies for renewed violence near its border. In a statement, Rwanda alleged that DR Congo’s army FARDC and Burundi’s army FDNB have been systematically bombing civilian villages close to the Rwandan border using fighter jets and armed drones. It said M23 and allied AFC rebels had been “forced to counter” these operations, calling them deliberate violations of the Washington Accords signed on December 4.
